Workshop: Getting Your Book Published, from Proposal to Print – Working with a Publisher or Self-Publishing

If so, then this workshop is for you. During this 5 week workshop you will learn the ins and outs of publishing, and walk through a series of steps that will help you develop, write, and pitch a successful book proposal!

Over the past 4 years I have had the pleasure to being contracted to write 2 books for major publishing houses, and to review book proposals and work in progress for Bloomsbury Publishing, London. I have also reviewed contracts for colleagues prior to their signing with a publisher. During this workshop you will receive first hand knowledge from a working professional with extensive experience in the field.

Each week I will walk you thorough a new aspect of the publishing business, and we will work on the development of your own book proposal. You do not need to have a project ready to publish in order to take this workshop. You can either come up with a project during the first week of class, or walk through the process to prepare for a future project!

Participants will create a full book proposal during the course of the workshop!

The course is comprised of 5 meetings, each an hour and a half

Attendance will be capped at 15 participants to allow individual attention and time for Q and A.

Start Your Week Right!
Classes will be held on Monday afternoons. Begin the week feeling accomplished and have goals to work on throughout the week.

Week 1
Meet the group, Defining your goals, Discuss the structure of a book proposal and the information a publisher will expect. The focus will be on the first half of the proposal.

Goals for Week 2: Begin writing your proposal.

Week 2
Understanding your market. Clearly defining your audience. We will also discuss the benefits and challenges of working with a publisher and of self publishing. Focus on the second half of the book proposal. Review your proposals in progress.

Goals for Week 2: Begin writing your proposal.

Week 3
The Financial Benefits of Publishing a Book with a Publisher vs. Self Publishing. Review your proposals in progress.

Goals for Week 3: Complete the second half of your book proposal.

Week 4
Understanding a book contract. We will discuss a number of terms you will see when offered a book contract. We will also discuss Licensing photos, book proofs, printing and shipping.

Goals for Week 4: Refine your book proposal and develop your pitch!

Week 5
Pitch you book proposal. Each member of the course will pitch their book proposal and receive feedback.

Note: Photography, art, design, technology, media, digital media, academic texts, and other forms of nonfiction are welcome! Fiction will not be covered in this workshop.

Thomas Werner

Thomas is the author of the book The Fashion Image for Bloomsbury

Publishing, London, with a second book on fine art photography currently being written for the publisher. An Editor at Large for IRKmagazine, a Paris based fashion and culture magazine and web site and past Photography Program Director at Parsons School of Design in New York, Thomas currently lectures internationally on topics of photography, fashion, education, and contemporary professional practices, with a series of recent presentations and workshops in 6 cities across China. He is the former owner of Thomas Werner Gallery in Manhattan’s Chelsea Art District, and a former National Board member and New York Chapter President for the American Society of Media Photographers. Werner also lead a team developing a media and literacy web site and resource center in five languages, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic and English for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations/UNESCO. He has worked with the United States Department of State on cultural projects in Russia, and been a photography consultant for COACH and Rodale Publishing, among others. Thomas was a recurrent instructor at the United Nations Education First Summer School, and is now presenting workshops on effective message development and visual communication on an international basis.

Over the last 15 years his research has been Russia centric spending an average of 20 days a year there partnering with 32 cultural, educational, and governmental organizations to develop projects in 29 cities. The focus has been the introduction of contemporary education methodologies, and the development of creative cultures within the country. Russian partners have included; The State Hermitage Museum, the National Center of Contemporary Art, Perm Regional Government, The Moscow Biennale for Young Art, National Centre of Photography for the Russian Federation, The Central State Archive of Film, Photographic and Phonographic Documents, The Moscow Biennale, The Pro Arte Foundation, and others. He has curated exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including seven co-curated exhibitions at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His private collection of Russian photographs and artifacts, have been exhibited internationally.
