Quick Tip: How to Test Shoot Your Way to Paid Assignments

In our story about how Kristin Gladney launched her advertising career, Gladney explains the key to succeeding as an advertising photographer. First nail down your technical skills, she says. Then “constantly create new work. Test shoot and shoot personal projects in addition to your commissioned work. Then show your work and repeat until you’re getting the assignments you want. Stick with it through the ups and downs.”

After internships with the photo agencies Magnum and Art + Commerce, she worked as a photo assistant for photographer William Abranowicz for about a year. He shoots still life, portraits, fashion, food and travel —“pretty much everything,” Gladney says. She learned lighting techniques, as well as how to manage clients and crew. “I paid attention to everything happening on set.”
