I have had a blog for the past 3 years. Ok, so it’s a photoblog, but its purpose is similar. Every week I post a new photo with a few short sentences below it. If I don’t have anything to share from a job, I shoot a personal piece and post that. Doing this serves the following purposes:
-It’s good for my SEO. Since the blog is fed through my homepage, it provides dynamic content on that page. This helps convince Google that my website deserves a higher ranking.
-It’s a way of reaching out. Each post automatically shows up on the P2 Photography fan page of Facebook as well as on Digg, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn and in my subscribers inbox. It’s a way to keep in touch and generate new interest all in one. And it’s a visual reminder to my previous clients that I’m still out there.
-It keeps me shooting. I will fully admit that while I have many grandiose ideas for personal projects, many do not receive the time or attention they deserve once I get busy. Fulfilling the commitment of one photo a week is a task that is manageable, and it has resulted in some cool personal work.
A photoblog is a nice intro to the world of blogging. Combine it with informational posts if you’ve got something to say. It is a simple and effective way to reach out to your community, your peers and your clients.
