San Francisco, December 5, 2025 — Today, the American Society of Media Photographers made one of the biggest announcements in its 80-year history: beginning in 2026, any student in a 2-year or 4-year visual arts program across the world can become an ASMP Student Member for free. No other photo trade association has taken this step or has done more to make sure the next generation of creators are well-equipped for the future of this industry and profession.
“As chair of the ASMP National Board, I can safely say that this will be one of the most impactful steps ASMP has ever taken. Removing the barriers for students and ensuring that they have access to the world class information, education, and community that ASMP offers is a game-changer in the world of professional photography. I, and the whole National Board, are immensely proud of this initiative, and excited for what the future holds,” says Kevin Brusie.
Starting in January of 2026, Students can apply for this new program and will be asked to verify their current enrollment with ASMP to receive this benefit. There is no cap on the number of students that can be part of this program, and it applies to all students across the globe.
ASMP Chief Operating Officer Melanie Porter notes that, “for 80 years, ASMP has found pride in its future-focused thinking, ability to take big risks, and success in achieving big goals. That continues today with this groundbreaking announcement. This organization understands the vital importance of these emerging creators, and we want to be the home for these students as they navigate the increasingly complex landscape of image making. It is hard to think of another announcement that ASMP has made in its history that parallels what we are launching in January, and each of us is excited to see the vibrancy and energy these students bring.”
Also beginning in January, students who signed up as Members in Q4 of 2025 will see their Membership Dues refunded automatically. “Cost should not be a barrier for knowledge for students who wish to learn and grow, and that is the commitment ASMP is making today.”
ASMP Chief Executive Officer Thomas Maddrey also sees the broader connection to other key groups in the industry. “We have had extensive conversations with the largest manufacturers, companies, and retailers in the industry who want to be part of this program as well by supporting and amplifying ASMP’s efforts. The response to this first-of-its-kind program has been overwhelming.”
This program, combined with the new Education Partner Program announced earlier in the week, completes ASMP’s efforts to reshape the way that the organization works with both students and institutions.
“ASMP leads the industry in its commitment to student, faculty, and education. Today’s announcement is the tangible, visible result of this organizational pillar,” Maddrey concludes. “It’s an important day for ASMP.”
