Philadelphia PA… The Board of Directors of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has announced a contribution of $85,000 to the Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS) Coalition, a non-profit organization dedicated to simplifying and facilitating the communication and management of image rights. This contribution will fund PLUS’ ongoing, mission-critical work as the international standards body for the communication of image rights, and was made possible by a 2007 distribution of funds received by ASMP from the Authors Coalition of America, the organization which distributes monies collected for non-title-specific works copied primarily in Scandinavia and Europe.

“We are delighted to contribute to PLUS’ important work which greatly benefits ASMP members and all professional photographers,” said Todd Joyce, President of ASMP and Principal of Joyce Photography. “We are pleased to be able to use funds from the Authors Coalition for its specified purpose of ‘furthering industry education and advocacy.’”

“ASMP has been a participant in the PLUS Coalition from the outset, from serving on our board representing all creators to contributing to the development of the standards,” notes Jeff Sedlik, PLUS President and CEO. “This generous contribution will enable PLUS to further its goals.”

The PLUS Coalition comprises participants from more than thirty countries, spanning all communities involved in creating, distributing, using and preserving images. The Coalition has developed and completed the PLUS standards which were recently adopted by three major book publishers. The publishers, McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Pearson, have announced that they will use the PLUS picture licensing glossary definitions in their contracts, and expect image suppliers to begin embedding PLUS license metadata in all images within the next year. The PLUS standards allow rights and attribution information to travel within image files in a machine-readable format that provides instant access and universal understanding. More information can be found at the PLUS Coalition website.

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) is the leading trade association for photographers who create images primarily for publication. Founded in 1944, ASMP is the leader in promoting photographers’ rights, providing education in better business practices, producing business publications for photographers, and helping to connect purchasers with professional photographers. ASMP has 39 chapters across the country and more than 7,000 members, including many of the world’s premier photographers.
