Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT / “Sales Tax”)

Whether you’re moving to Arizona from another state or starting your first photography business in Arizona, this is the single most important piece of business information you need to know: everything you do as a photographer is taxable. Unlike some nearby states, there are no exceptions based on delivery method; print or digital file, email or hard drive, it is all taxable under established Arizona tax code.

To quote the Arizona Department of Revenue:

All of a photographer’s activities are taxable under the retail classification. Photography includes taking, processing, printing pictures, prints or images on or from film, video or other similar media. Gross receipts derived from the sales of photography are taxable under the retail classification.

AZDOR can and will audit your books and assess penalties and back taxes. Always make sure you have valid TPT license(s) and are filing your returns correctly. If you believe you may have misfiled, we recommend you contact a local business accounting professional for assistance.

TPT licenses can be acquired at AZtaxes.gov and require annual renewal. AZtaxes.gov is also your one-stop shop for filing TPT returns, making tax payments, and managing your license.
