Make Money and Learn Photography as an Assistant
March 21, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Free – $5.00![](https://www.asmp.org/phoenix/wp-content/uploads/sites/14/2019/03/msalh-0319-asmppromo.jpeg)
Everyone can use a good assistant — but what makes a good assistant, and how do you get to be a great one? This month, join ASMP AZ/PHX and speaker Miguel Salhuana to find out, and learn how to make money and learn photography through assisting!
Some people dismiss working as an assistant as low-level grunt work, but that’s a mistake. Assistants can be vital to a production going off without a hitch, and more importantly, assisting is an excellent way to learn both the art and the business of photography, all while getting paid (and fed)!
It’s easier than ever today to jump into shooting without assisting — but ask nearly any photographer who’s done it and they’ll tell you they regret not working as an assistant.
Photographers, don’t pass this event up either! The same skills and equipment knowledge needed to assist effectively will help you speed safely through your solo shoots too. If you’re looking to level up your equipment skills, you’ll take home some tricks too. (And you’ll definitely pick up some ideas about how assistants can make your life easier!)
Join us Third Thursday, March 21st, to learn How to Make Money and Learn Photography through Assisting!
About The Speaker
My journey into photography began at the age of 10 when my dad let me use his 110 camera. I was intrigued with the concept of a little box being able to capture a moment in time. When my dad bought himself a 35mm SLR it didn’t take long until it ended up being mine. I fell in love with photography so much that after my first summer job, at the age of 15, I took all the money I had earned and bought a Nikon FA system instead of a car. I gained experience doing sports photography, portraits, events like the marching band and, of course, the cheerleaders.
My journey as an assistant began when I took a fashion photography class at SCC and met Scott Farence. He introduced me to ASMP and I joined and listed myself on the “Find an Assistant” tool. In the time since, I have had the pleasure of working with local and international photographers in the Phoenix area. I have worked on lifestyle shoots and editorials, and had the chance to be the First Assistant at a Nike commercial shoot with over 40 crew members.
