Free Talk at Ohio State University: “Lights, Camera, Science: Data Visualization with a Hollywood Twist”

March 3, 2024 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This looks like an interesting talk.  Based on the description, the “data visualization” looks like it may not be lens-based, but what caught my eye is this:

“Have you ever found yourself captivated by a video that takes you on a flight through the stars, or watched in awe as DNA gracefully folded within the human body? From YouTube journeys to documentary films and museum exhibits, these visual experiences transport us to realms that elude our direct senses – too distant, too minuscule, or hidden within other structures. The question arises: How do we access these invisible wonders? The answer lies in the combination of data visualization with Hollywood filmmaking techniques. This talk will unveil the magic of cinematic scientific visualization, where the invisible intricacies of the universe come to life before our eyes. This event is free and open to the public. RSVPs via the link above are requested, but not required to attend. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis.”

I looked up the speaker’s website (Kalina Borkiewicz ). It points to her data visualization reel on YouTube. Worth a look to see what they mean by data visualization.

Our profession is all about creating captivating stories using imagery. If her work is visually compelling enough to be included in documentaries all the way up to IMAX formats, that seems like something that might come in handy to know. If you’re allergic to code, maybe you won’t create the data visualization yourself. But maybe know you’ll learn  who is the sort of person who can create this kind of work for you and how they go about doing it. And if you aren’t allergic to code, you may find yourself a new way to create moving images for your work.

Go to Ohio State’s site to RSVP and to get specific instructions on where to go inside the Ohio Union for the talk. It is free. The RSVP is not required. This is not an ASMP event, but we are publicizing it because we think it might be of interest to some ASMP members.
