Behind The Lens: A Candid Look at Photography Assignments

ASMP New England is excited to announce our next “Behind the Lens” program. Professional photographers Tony Luong and Mike Ritter will take attendees through the details of one of their recent shoots. Final photographs from each project will be displayed along with behind-the-scenes images, lighting setups, and documents, such as client correspondence, estimates, contracts, and more.
As much about business and marketing, as the technical and creative approach, Behind the Lens will showcase these creatives’ promotion, estimating and planning decisions, as well as their amazing images.
Join us at Bentley University on Tuesday, March 24, at 6 pm for presentations by these two professionals, followed by discussion and Q&A.
A huge thank you to Digital Silver Imaging for generously donating $100 print certificates for our raffle. Make sure you don’t miss your chance to win!

Tony Luong
Originally from Clinton, Connecticut, Tony Luong is a photographer based in Boston, Massachusetts. He received an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. With a background in fine art and years of experience working with publications such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, The New Yorker and Time, and commercial clients such as Nike, IBM, and Square – his work is often described as a revolving door that consists of the everyday, the inexplicable, and the exploration of the human condition. Fascinated by the push and pull of life, he aims to make images that portray the in-between moments of spontaneity and engagement while conveying dignity and nuance.

Mike Ritter
Mike Ritter has been a professional freelance photographer in Boston for 21 years. He was an ASMP New England board member from 2010-2021 serving as president from 2015-2021. His clients include area educational, financial, and non-profit organizations.
His personal work often focuses on Dorchester, the community he’s called home since 2005. Completed with over 200 free sittings, his Beautiful Dot project showed the loving, diverse people who live in Dorchester and ran counter to how Dorchester is typically portrayed in the media. Currently he’s working on a project named Who Are We? which explores the concept of America and people who call it home looking to tell a more varied and truthful story than the absurd lies coming from the current administration. Sadly, seeing how effective these lies are at driving narratives, this is no time for professional storytellers to be on the sidelines.

PS. Mike is currently doing a project called Who Are We? and hopes you’ll participate. Through stylized portraits which will together form an American flag, Who Are We? will tell a more nuanced, diverse, and truthful story of America than the current administration’s version. Sixty-five of the needed 215 subjects have been photographed, and Mike is hoping to finish by July 4th. He will have his lights set up during social hour of the Behind The Lens event. Please jump in and share your perspective.
