ASMP — American Society of Media Photographers

Statement of ASMP CEO James Edmund Datri on the January 6th Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol

As an association and a community, we are very proud of and immensely grateful for the photographers who risked their lives to document yesterday’s violence and assault against our democratic institutions and democracy. The images these brave photographers captured showed the nation and the world the contemptible acts of those who took part in the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, incited and encouraged by President Trump in his continued attempt to overturn the clear will of the American voters. Having worked in the U.S. House of Representatives for a dozen years, and having served as executive director of the Democratic Caucus there, I was shaken to the core by these disturbing images of a place I love and know so well. To our ASMP members in Washington capturing these tragic events: We stand with you and remain here for you as you bring the truth to people around the globe through your enormously important work.

    Well said.
Let’s hope you do not have to write a follow-up for additional, insurgent craziness.

Thank your posting this pointing out the important work of photographers who bring the events of the world, in this horrible incident, and many others to light. We are fortunate to live in a world where such images do make an impact, because they are seen!

Wow, well said!!! Thank you for making note of the importance of our ASMP member’s contributions to editorial photography and thank you to the numerous photographers who risked your lives that day, too. We can never keep democracy in darkness.
