About Company

Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures (BCPA) offers dynamic, immersive photo workshops both in the U.S. and overseas, along with mentorships, consultations, and online classes-including Lightroom training. We inspire photographers to think creatively, push past their comfort zones, and make images with more impact. Our mission is to send participants home with the tools and confidence to grow long after the workshop ends.

Margo Taussig Pinkerton, a Life Member of ASMP, has held leadership roles at both the chapter and national levels. Her work is featured in museums and private collections, and her infectious energy, generous teaching style, and deep connection with students have built a strong, enduring community of alumni.

Margo Taussig Pinkerton doesn’t just teach photography-she also guides participants through the composing and developing of their work using Lightroom. But what really sets her apart is how she draws upon time-tested art principles such as color theory, composition, tonality, and other key elements that go way beyond the technical side of things. She’s much more focused on the creative and aesthetic side of photography. That doesn’t mean she ignores the technical stuff-far from it, but she encourages her participants to think through and discover their own answers.

Often, Margo will respond to a question with a question. She wants to help photographers work through their own challenges and find their own voices. As her late husband and fellow photographer, Arnie Zann, once said, “Technique without passion is meaningless.” Margo encourages people to start with a concept, use their vision to build their composition, and make sure their passion shines through in the final image.

"I have just finished my umpteenth workshop with Margo, and there is a reason she is my go-to workshop family. She puts a lot of effort into making her workshops work for all the participants from scouting beforehand, even to places she has been many times, to spending the time with everyone in the field and classroom to push us all to the next level in our photographic journey no matter where we are starting. Days are long and rewarding. Margo push participants to "seek your own vision." Don't settle for the postcard picture; make it your own. In the field she pushes you to do just that by not giving you technical answers, rather asking probing questions about why and how you are choosing to compose what you are photographing. Then she ·will guide you to help you achieve something that may better fit your vision. As your abilities improve, her guidance goes deeper. Learning continues in the classroom as you get subjected to the critique sessions. Unlike many workshops where everything is wonderful except maybe you might want to tweak this or that, here you get honest comments, always in a constructive way. Additionally, all the participants comment on all the other participants work. Although a little intimidating to the 'newbies', listening to everyone's point of view gives you a wide spectrum of opinion of what may make a photograph work or not, both yours and others. When you critique other's work constructively, you not only help the other person, but also hone your critical skills regarding your own work. Finally, and just as importantly, the workshops are just plain fun. The camaraderie that develops gives the group a synergy that makes the whole experience work so well as a workshop and a vacation. Every BCPA workshop I have been on has had a mix of new participants and returning ones. Every workshop I have been on, I've known at least one participant from a previous workshop (except the first one of course). The high rate of return speaks volumes about the level of care and instruction of Margo."

— Mark S., Virginia

"I was initially intrigued by your website, on which you emphasized lots of individual instruction, and that's why I wanted to do a workshop with you - checking you out, so to speak. I've taken several good photography workshops over the years, and I can enthusiastically say that yours is far and away the best workshop I've taken. I was impressed by the fact that everyone received one-on-one help from you, in the field and during image processing. In contrast to some workshops, you didn't wait to be approached for help. You were proactive and made sure you spent time with each participant to ensure they were getting the most from their workshop experience. I've never been to a workshop in which participants received so much one-on-one help. I was especially impressed with the help you gave on image processing. In my experience, the extent of the help you provided is unprecedented. I very much liked the shooting assignments. They made you think. The highlight of the workshop for me was the critiques. Again, these were conducted at a deeper, more instructive level, than critiques I had experienced at other workshops. And last, but not least, you are such fun to be with. I had a blast! It was a great workshop from all perspectives, and I look forward to doing more of them with you."

— Tom C., North Carolina

"I highly recommend Margo as both an instructor and mentor. Of all the photographers I've worked with over the years-both well-known and lesser known-Margo has had the most profound influence on how I visualize, capture, and develop my images. She has a deep appreciation for photography across all genres and styles, and she stands out in her rare ability to help you bring the image in your mind to life. Every session with her leaves me more inspired and equipped with new insights...and once the mentorship was completed ... Thanks again for a great series of meetings-learned even more than I'd hoped."

— Art J., California

"Do you really believe all of these client comments? They are glowing in their praise and unanimous in talking about a fantastic experience. So why should I write anything? I am 'of a certain age' and have been asked, 'Why do you need to be in this workshop? Don't you know how to photograph well by now?' Margo leads very special workshops. Workshops filled with interesting imagery and worthwhile instruction. Each student is encouraged to develop a unique vision, and one of the most interesting aspects of any workshop is learning from other members of the group. I continue to be amazed at what different people see at the same location. Taking a picture requires patience, planning and practice. I watched in absolute awe while one member of our group very carefully composed each picture before pushing the shutter button. Watching her was inspirational for me. In some ways, the experience at that moment was more valuable than my own picture taking. Margo also spends time with each student on the computer and again, though I consider myself somewhat computer literate, there is always information to be learned. Lightroom is stressed for good reason. Another reason for choosing these particular workshops is that Margo has a view of photography as an art form and a passion for sharing her enthusiasm with others. What more can one ask?"

— George D., Florida
