2017 marked the first year that ASMP Philadelphia, along with the design, photo editing and strategic guidance from ASMP member Neil Binkley, changed the format of its annual photo contest – and it’s already won a design award.
Previously, it had been a bound book that historically required membership to pay for the bulk of the printing costs. The new format was digitally printed by Magcloud, and at less than half the cost of previous years.
Binkley was also responsible for the mailing list, and decided to increase the number of recipients who worked at major ad agencies, magazines and brands outside of the Philadelphia area – in addition to the local creatives who had always been targeted – feeling that “people outside our region should have a guide to quality photographers in the city.” The finished annual was mailed to 100’s of creatives.
Neil also won a 2018 Art Director’s Club Philadelphia Award for “Print Design (Magazine/Publication)” for the 2017 photo annual, with ASMP Philadelphia receiving additional exposure to Philadelphia creatives from all of the top local ad agencies and corporations. He intends to submit this year’s annual as well.
For the second year in a row, Aphotoeditor (Rob Haggart) shared the photo annual on his influential Instagram profile, with this post: https://www.instagram.com/p/BnCYndSjGu0/. Garnering over 330 likes, he featured the work of 13 ASMP Philly photographers across 9 images.
Neil also created and implemented a social media campaign to promote the party celebrating the photo annual, and to celebrate the chapter, with the majority of the winners attending the event. The posts generated approximately a 10% increase in followers and almost 6,000 impressions on Instagram – and featured the winners, judges (including a Vanity Fair photo producer), and chapter sponsors.
Meet the Designer/Editor Neil Binkley
Neil Binkley is a portfolio consultant and designer for both emerging and established photographers, guiding them towards bigger clients and more fulfilling work. He achieves this through marketing strategy, website and print portfolio editing and layout, print and email promo design and strategy (incl. gif animation design), demo reel video editing, photo retouching, fine art photobook design, and a lot more. Neil works with editorial, advertising, corporate, and fine art photographers of all specialties.
Beginning in Fall 2018, Neil is launching a true labor of love: Photopod. Photopod is a podcast about the entire photography industry, as told by the people who hire photographers, those who show their work as agents or gallerists, and by the photographers themselves. Learn more at www.photopodpod.com.
Prior to this, he co-founded the photography agency Wonderful Machine and raised its membership from one (yes 1!) to over 500 photographers across the world. Neil has personally shared photographers’ print portfolios with top ad agencies and magazines, including: BBDO New York; Goodby, Silverstein and Partners; and WIRED magazine.
His previous career was in the advertising and corporate design worlds (in addition to filmmaking), which partially informs his instincts on design aesthetic and branding, though he continues to study the ever-changing photography market. He’s excited that his experience in the Hollywood and Portland film industries has come full-circle, now that photographers are shooting motion with ever-greater frequency!
Neil’s work has garnered winning entries in the Art Director’s Club, PDN’s Photography Annual, PRINT Magazine’s Regional Design Annual, Applied Arts Photography Annual, and elsewhere.
