Editor’s Note: Ellen von Unwerth is an ASMP Life Member. Her exhibition opens in London on May 4th and runs through May 18th.
“The exhibition is called Ladyland, my favourite subject,” Ellen von Unwerth cackles ahead of her upcoming London show. The German photographer is, of course, referring to the sensual, provocative and playful images of women that have become her calling card. Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista are just a few of her girls that will feature on the walls of Mayfair’s Opera Gallery, an opportunity she’s excited about not because of the kudos, but “because exhibitions touch a different kind of people than fashion magazines and books”.
Her hope that people have a “beautiful moment” when looking at her work mirrors her own love affair with the craft itself, and the women she photographs. “The best moment is when you discover a model at the start of the career, when she’s really fresh and spontaneous and all yours. When they grow out of this stage, it becomes a different thing, and you have to look for somebody new,” she sighs.
