9:00-9:45 , Matt Gade, Sports Photographer of the Year

What does it take for a sports photographer working in a small town to beat out photographers covering the Olympics? Shooting for the Daily Republic in Mitchell, South Dakota, Matt travels most of the state not to cover the NFL or Olympic games, but rodeo, prep sports and “Mutton Bustin’.”

10:00-10:45 Jessica Phelps, Newspaper Photographer of the Year

His work includes stories about men building a family life after living a gang life Colorado, how one immigrant family holds on to normalcy after their father is the targeted for deportation and life inside a small California community started by African-American farmers.

2:00-3:00 Emily Kassie, Multimedia Photographer of the Year

Reporting for The New York Times and The Marshal Project, Emily tackles tough topics like sexual assault, immigration and sex offenses with insightful reporting to produce short documentaries that reveal that seemingly black and white issues are filled with complexities and humanity.

Traveling the globe, Fabio has covered the biggest, most dramatic stories of the year like the conflict in Gaza, immigrants trying to cross the border from Mexico into the U.S. What made his work stand out, noted the judges, is that within these issues, Fabio finds the tenderness of small moments.
