Video is what’s next, right? Video is what clients want! Video is what audiences want! Yet video scares you.  I know, I have been there. Video looked overwhelmingly complex and way beyond me just a few years ago. But I was wrong. Now, I make videos full time for personal projects and for paying clients. And you can too.

Today’s successful narrative video maker creates brief, dramatic, visually compelling videos maximizing ambient sound and compelling visuals, while minimizing talking heads.  In this class, you will make one of these “new” videos, working as a one-person band, gathering video, ambient audio, performing interviews, and using photographs. We will explore the gear required for audio and video capture as well as options for software for editing your motion picture content into final videos. By going through the process from project inception, through capture, organizing and finally to outputting your film, we will take the intimidation out of video. Each student will be expected to produce a short film during the class in order to apply the lessons of the class.  The choice of subject matter of the video which you produce is completely your own.

As an experienced media professional, you already have most of the skills needed to be as successful with moving images as you already are with still images. You just need someone to guide you through the transition from still photographer to film-maker. Then you need to dedicate time to make many videos, some for paying clients and some for yourself. The class will be taught remotely (five sessions two hours each, once a week over five weeks.)  Some of the lessons will be adapted to the Covid 19 world we are in right now, but the basic skills will apply now and in the future.  We will explore ways of working creatively within the lockdown including how to use video conferencing for interviews and/or gathering audio. In order to use the limited time of the sessions most effectively, many of the lessons will be pre recorded. Setting aside time to watch those lessons and to do other advanced preparation will be an important part of the class

Students from the June 2020 class said:

Boy, this class has been so much more than I was expecting! I really feel I learned a lot from it and I have less intimidation about the video process. Your teaching style is so approachable. I have been raving about you to a friend of mine who took another ASMP class. – Tracey B.

Thank you for a great little workshop that got me doing more video which I had been hesitant about doing myself… Your workshop HAS helped to take the intimidation out of video! 🙂  – Michele C.

I have a greater respect for how much goes into even a short film, and so appreciative of how much we learned in a short amount of time.  Thank you for sharing your expertise, your wealth of information in terms of videos, documents, links…and on! Thanks also for your accessibility and extra support. – Judy S.
