On Tuesday, May 28, between 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. CST (7:00 – 8:30 p.m. EST), the Houston Center for Photography will host this free webinar with photographers and attorneys Lisa C. Alvarez, ASMP National’s Board Member, and Thomas Maddrey, ASMP’s Chief Legal Officer in which they will cover best practices, copyright registration, and what to do when you have been infringed.

Registration is required via this link.  View Houston Center for Photography event page.

With many opportunities to share their images, today’s digital universe offers photographers a big challenge — how to protect the work they create when it is put out into the world. Whether it is your pictures being stolen from Instagram, or an infringement on a larger scale, ensuring that your images remain yours can be a full-time job.

In this webinar, Lisa C. Alvarez and Thomas Maddrey, two American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) leadership team members, will guide you through things you can do today to protect your work and feel confident dealing with others stealing your images. Lisa and Tom are photographers and attorneys who work with image-makers day in and day out. Understand your rights as they cover key topics including best practices, copyright registration, and what to do when you have been infringed. This event will include a 20-minute Q&A session.

Lisa C. Alvarez is an attorney and nature photographer who helps photographers protect their creative work and businesses. Her virtual law practice offers traditional legal services, as well as educational programs and resources to help photographers build long-term financial stability and uphold the integrity of their creative work. As a nature photographer, she focuses on wildlife conservation and fine-art nature photography. When not speaking on the latest legal trends impacting photographers, you can find Lisa working on her personal photo project, the survival story of a unique but declining population of Western Purple Martins in urban Sacramento.

Thomas Maddrey is the Chief Legal Officer & Head of National Content and Education for ASMP, the premier national trade association for visual creators. With over a decade of experience as a commercial and fine-art photographer, Thomas became an attorney to work with the community of creators who face legal and business challenges each day of their careers. As part of his advocacy work, Thomas has authored more than a dozen amicus briefs, including being the Counsel of Record for multiple U.S. Supreme Court amicus briefs. Thomas obtained his law degree from the SMU Dedman School of Law and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Copyright Alliance in addition to holding the position of Section Chair for the Entertainment, Art, and Sports Law section of the Dallas Bar Association.
