Steps to Success

Selina clearly instructs photographers and provides us with specific sales and marketing steps to take in order to develop a successful business. Attendees will participate in a 2 hour keynote driven visual program that clearly explains the consistent steps taken by photographers who’ve been very successful in marketing their work and growing a business that meets their creative, financial and professional goals. Through the two case studies shown, the audience is able to see the actual sales and marketing tools, and the results each photographer has achieved. Those attending will learn how each marketing tool supports the total program and will be able to see where they need to put their own time, attention and finances in order to build a business that will succeed for them!

Lunch (included)

Licensing, Pricing and Professional Business Practices

Jenna will share examples from her own work in photography and motion to discuss the challenges, and offer real world  solutions in regards to :

  • Pricing
  • Licensing
  • Negotiations
  • Contracts

Jenna will begin by discussing Copyright, giving a brief history of how it came to exist, the positive and negative aspects of the copyright system today, and the current initiative to create a more reasonable system for pursuing infringements, also known as The CASE Act.

The project rate pricing system will be discussed and attendees will walk away from the program with a roadmap for better business practices as well as resources to further their success as a small business owner.

Q&A

There will be a one-hour Q&A with both Jenna and Selina, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask the presenters any questions that (may) still remain.

BONUS SESSION: Contracts and Your Legal Toolbox

ASMP General Counsel Tom Maddrey
Tom Maddrey

Former commercial photographer and ASMP (national) legal counsel Tom Maddrey will bring on the legal knowledge! We’ve added this bonus as a roundtable discussion at the end of the day. How valuable is it for you to be able to sit down and talk with an attorney who specializes in intellectual property and copyright?

Every photographer knows how to get their desired images by adjusting their aperture or dialing in exposure compensation, but few realize it is exactly the same on the legal and business front. Your agreements and contracts are the foundation of taking the passion and skill you have for photography and translating that into a successful career.

“Contract” is not a dirty word. Nor are contracts something to fear. On the contrary, contracts are simply agreements to do something in exchange for something else. Every time you agree to take a job, or license your work, or rent gear, you have entered into a contract—even if it’s not in writing. This presentation discusses how you can protect your rights and save yourself heartache by understanding and taking advantage of a few simple rules regarding the many agreements that you make all the time as photographers.

Add-on Sunday: Private Portfolio Consultations or Portfolio Reviews

Selina will hold 1-on-1 portfolio consultations and mentoring. These 90-minute intensive sessions must be booked in advance. Selina’s normal hourly rate is $300, making this consultation a $450 value. However she has graciously offered to reduce the price to only $350. Saturday attendees may book their private session with a $50/hour discount.

Selina will set a time to discuss the photographer’s needs and together you determine the agenda for your consultation and the length of your appointment. Photographers should contact Selina directly at selina@selinamaitreya.com with the Subject line: I want an appt in Dallas. Please do this beforehand so that you can plan how to maximize your time!

60 Minute Portfolio Review with Selina

You and Selina will initiate your portfolio review with you sharing with Selina what your current business assignments and client list entail, and what your future creative and professional goals are.

With this information in mind, Selina will then view your print portfolio or website gallery’s and provide you with her evaluation of the marketability of your current body of work.

Specific suggestions will be shared so that you know what steps you need to take through editing and pagination and possibly any new shooting needed in order to build a body of work that will sell to the clients you seek to receive assignments from.

Selina will record the review for you and send it within 24 hours. These reviews will be available for $175 for Saturday attendees, or $250 otherwise.

60 Minute Portfolio Review with Jenna

You and Selina will initiate your portfolio review with you sharing with Jenna what your current business assignments and client list entail, and what your future creative and professional goals are.

With this information in mind, Jenna will then view your print portfolio or website gallery’s and provide you with her evaluation of the marketability of your current body of work.

Specific suggestions will be shared so that you know what steps you need to take through editing and pagination and possibly any new shooting needed in order to build a body of work that will sell to the clients you seek to receive assignments from. You are free to record the session if desired.
