Covid-19 has altered one of the year’s big photo award programs.
The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund has announced the list of finalists in the 41st annual W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography. In years past, the Fund has given out a single $40,000 grant to a recipient whose work follows the tradition of the compassionate photojournalism exhibited by W. Eugene Smith during his 45-year career. This year, in response to the coronavirus crisis, grants of $10,000 each are being given to five photographers.
The change to the grant is for 2020 only. If necessary, Smith Fund board of Trustees may revisit this option for 2021.
“Despite the pandemic and its stranglehold on world economies and social gatherings, this year’s Smith Fund received the highest number of entries in the grant’s 41-year history with finalists being selected from entries representing 66 countries,” notes the Fund.
