Arguing that Congress’s prior COVID-19-related stimulus packages have done little help to help freelancers, the self-employed, and microbusinesses, ASMP joined with a number of other creators’ rights organizations* to urge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles Schumer to support new legislation that provides more specific and effective relief to their members “who are being financially devastated by the pandemic.” See letter to Senators McConnell and Schumer.
The trade groups urged Congress to alter the PPP to expressly set aside a specific amount of the program’s monies for freelancers, the self-employed, and microbusinesses with 10 or fewer employees. In addition, the organizations called upon Congress to amend the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) so that 501(c)(6) trade and professional organizations would be eligible under the PPP program for the first time. ASMP and other trade groups are providing their members with essential information through virtual town meetings and similar programs, but their ability to continue these critical services is in jeopardy, as their in-person sustaining events are canceled, and their members are less able to afford dues payments.
ASMP’s Executive Director, Tom Kennedy, is hard at work along with the association’s General Counsel Tom Maddrey, and its Advocacy Counsel, Mike Klipper, in promoting these changes to the existing and future stimulus programs. We will keep you posted on developments as they occur.
