How Do You Make an Award-Winning Krupnik

Second Place – Video

ASMP: What was your inspiration for taking this video?

Dylan Buyskes: I have been a professional photographer for a little over 12 years and had noticed clients requesting more and more video work. So about 2 years ago I decided to start learning and creating with video. I had met one of the owners of Buffalo Distilling at a party and got to learn about the local distillery. I loved their story and commitment to the product and asked if I could create a video for them. This became a personal project and expense out of my own pocket. They produce whiskey, Gin, Bourbon, and Vodka but recently had created an award-winning Krupnik (Polish Honey Vodka) and it made perfect sense to create a video to promote this product.

ASMP: What type of setting do you prefer?

DB: Settings really depend on the feel of the video I am creating. As for the distillery, it was important to show the real behind the scenes happenings and locations of where the supplies came from.

ASMP: Is there anything unique about your style or approach?

DB: I try to shoot video that mimics my photography style. Looking for angles or shots that are unique, not a normal viewing angle. Sometimes shoot throughs work really well for me. Using objects in and out of focus to create layers of interest.

ASMP: What type of lighting did you use for this image, series or video?

DB: Most of this video was shot with ambient light, late afternoon or early morning sunlight.

ASMP: How long have you been shooting this type of photography?

DB: 12 years professional photography, 2 years shooting video work.

ASMP: What other photographers’ or artists’ work inspires you?

DB: Joe McNally, Joel Grimes

ASMP: When did you join ASMP and what do you find most valuable about your membership?

DB: I have been a member for 2 years. I really enjoy the local chapter and the events that are offered. besides learning from them it has offered great networking opportunities to link up with other professionals in the field.

ASMP: What is the more important relationship you’ve formed through your ASMP membership?

DB: I have a close friend that I have been working together for a number of years. Our relationship has grown through ASMP events and I have had the opportunity to see him grow as an individual and a photographer.

ASMP: What kind of gear do you use?

DB: I shoot Nikon, mostly Nikon glass, with a range of lighting tools.

ASMP: What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first started your career as a photographer?

DB: I didn’t realize how important my early days of jobs working in the service industry would help me in photography. It has helped me handle clients, and big shoots with many moving parts.

ASMP: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself and/or your work? Go ahead, surprise us with something unique and unusual.

DB: A few years back I realized that my first wedding photo I shot I was about 10 years old. I had been looking through family photos and came across one of my Mom, stepdad, grandparents and my sister. I was not in the photo. I then realized that I had actually taken that photo. I never thought at that moment that photography would be such a big part of my life and career. It has been such an adventure to this day, and I will continue to challenge myself and learn.
