Second Place – Series

ASMP: What was your inspiration for taking these photos?

Patrick Heagney: This is a series of photos taken with a 0.014 megapixel Gameboy Camera from 1998. The camera shoots in four-tone black and white and saves the files as a bitmap, these images have been colorized but are otherwise unaltered. I wanted to get back to basics with this series and it doesn’t get more basic than this.

If you’d like a laugh, google Gameboy Camera and see what this thing looks like. It’s actually just a game cartridge with a very rudimentary plastic lens on top.

ASMP: What type of lighting did you use for this image, series or video?

PH: There is no way to sync Gameboy with strobes so I had to use different lights than my usual kit for this project. I used a combination of Totas and Rifa lights.

ASMP: How long have you been shooting this type of photography?

PH: I only discovered the Gameboy Camera about a year ago when I was searching for old digital cameras online. It’s been a bit of a learning curve getting used to the rudimentary controls and getting decent images out of it.

ASMP: When did you join ASMP and what do you find most valuable about your membership?

PH: I’ve been a member of ASMP for many years, first as an assistant and then as a photographer. The community is great and I’ve gotten more than enough work out of it to pay for my membership each year.

ASMP: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself and/or your work? Go ahead, surprise us with something unique and unusual.

PH: I think pursuing personal projects outside of my assignment work has been really invaluable to me. It gives me a chance to grow and flex muscles I wouldn’t get to exercise otherwise. It’s also a great way to get clients interested in me as an artist and image-maker. Even if the personal project isn’t a style that they have a need for it’s a way to get people’s attention and from there I can introduce them to my commercial work.
