“Rohingya Refugee Camps One Year In”
By John Rae
- View from “Lonely Tree” hilltop. Over 1 million people now live in the camps.
- Kamal sits with his remaining family members outside the house that he built upon arrival.
- Girls pump water early in the morning with the “Lonely Tree” in background.
- Playing with baby inside Sona and Kamal’s house.
- Kamal and Sona’s ID card. Without this card they cannot access any of the NGO services.
- Unloading the rice truck outside TIKA (Turkish Government Relief Agency) headquarters. Men and women are expected to help NGOs in the camps in exchange for stipends that they can use to buy necessities beyond those supplied by NGOs.
- Waiting room for Save The Children’s pediatric clinic. Many of the children have been through traumatic experiences and this clinic offers mental health care.
- Child waits for attention at MSF health clinic.
- Young girl working on homework before school. Schools and “Child Friendly Zones” have been set up in the camps by UNICEF.
- GI clinic in government hospital in Cox’s Bazar. NGOs now realize that international funds must go to improve the local resources. When a million people show up next to a town local people feel the impact. Food prices go up. Housing prices go up and the increased demand on services often causes their quality to go down. If these impacts on the local community are ignored protests can start.
