“To me, this photo perfectly sums up the chaos and symphony that is Nepal. I don’t know if I could have expressed that when I clicked the shutter, but I did feel a need to capture this image – and I took as many shots as I could while our vehicle danced through the intersection, even straining my neck to get one or two more frames as it disappeared behind us.”

ASMP: Can you provide some background on your winning photo?

Teri Campbell: This photograph was captured while I was on assignment in Kathmandu, Nepal. I was working for an NGO that provides opportunities for girls who have been victims of sex trafficking. We were heading back to our hotel when I noticed this crazy intersection. My task was to not only document the work being done, but to showcase the environment in which they operated.

ASMP: What type of setting inspires you the most?

TC: I am most captivated by light, no matter the subject.

ASMP: Is there anything unique about your style or approach?

TC: I think it is my ability to create or recognize beautiful light. Whether I am in the studio, or on location, that is the consistent theme of my work.

ASMP: Was there anything unique about the type of lighting you used for this image or series?

TC: This image was capture using only available light – (and dust from the road).

ASMP: How long have you been shooting this type of photography?

TC: I’ve had my own studio since 1988, but I almost never shot on location until I began working digitally. I have been capturing these types of assignments since around 2008.

ASMP: What is the most important relationship you’ve formed through your ASMP membership?

TC: Connection with community.

ASMP: What kind of gear do you use?

TC: Canon cameras – Canon and Zeiss Lenses – Red, Canon and Phantom cameras for motion work – DJI Gimbals – Broncolor and Fiilex lighting – Really Right Stuff, ball heads, brackets and plates – Black Rapid camera strap – Tether Tools accessories – Pocket Wizard.

ASMP: What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first started taking photos?

TC: That photography is art, and that I am an artist. I used to view myself as a technician and rejected an artist label, but as I have matured in my career, I realize I was an artist all along. And now that I embrace that reality, my world has opened up.

ASMP: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself and/or your work?

TC: A few years ago I flew to Cape Town South Africa for a concert! Since watching the movie “Searching for Sugar Man” I had wanted to see Rodriquez live in concert – but I wanted it to be in South Africa, (where he is know an loved more than Elvis!)
