Growing for Good Launch Event
Friday, July 28, 6:00-8:00pm
TICKETS ARE NOW FREE – RSVP BELOW

Come and celebrate the official launch of Growing for Good—a collaboration between ASMP Chicago/Midwest, APA Chicago, the Workbook, and Urban Growers Collective (UGC). Urban Growers Collective is a Black- and women-led non-profit farm in Chicago working to build a more just and equitable local food system. The Growing for Good project offers our community a pro-bono opportunity to photograph UGC’s growing season from June to October 2023.

At the July 28 launch event at Stephen Hamilton Studio (1520 W. Fulton), photographer Scott Van Osdol will share a presentation on the benefits of embracing pro-bono work as a creative tool to build your portfolio, expand your network, and give back. Attendees will also enjoy a tasting menu made by local chefs from ChiFresh Kitchen using produce from UGC farms. This event is open to all. We hope you’ll join us for a night of connection and inspiration!

Agenda

  • 6:00 PM: Doors open / Healthy appetizers prepared by Chicago chefs straight from the Urban Growers Collective city-based gardens.
  • 7:00 PM: Keynote presentation “How Pro Bono Work Built My Career”
  • 7:45 PM: Your turn to ask! Q&A
  • 8:00 PM: Event ends

Pro Bono Opportunity

As mentioned earlier, we have partnered with UGC to offer an opportunity to our community. We have two options:

  • Option 1: On Saturday, July 29th, join Scott Van Osdol, taking pictures and giving back at UGC farms around Chicago. We need photographers, video makers, drone pilots, and hair and make-up artists.
  • Option 2: Option 2: Collaborate with UGC to help document their annual growing season from June-October, 2023.

If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please complete this short Google Form to let us know!

About Urban Growers Collective
Urban Growers Collective (UGC) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was co-founded  by Laurell Sims and Erika Allen in the fall of 2017. They operate 8 urban farms on 11 acres of land, predominantly located on Chicago’s South Side. Working closely with community partners, their approach is to demonstrate the development of community-based food systems and to support communities in developing systems of their own where food is grown, prepared, and distributed within the community itself. They aim to address the inequities and structural racism in the food system and communities of color. Rooted in growing food, their mission is to cultivate nourishing environments which support health, economic development, healing, and creativity through urban agriculture.
