Message from the Executive Director
One of the topics discussed at the recent ASMP National Board Meeting was the importance of community. Always considered a major benefit of ASMP membership, community-building has become increasingly critical in light of fast-moving changes in the industry. “We are working to find more and better ways to facilitate communication among members, chapters and the national Board. We believe it benefits everyone to do as much sharing of thoughts and ideas as possible. You will be hearing more about how we plan to go forward with new ways to make this happen.” If you have ideas you’d like to share, contact Tom by e-mail kennedy@asmp.org or phone (215) 451-2767 ext 201.

ON YOUR SIDE
- Last month, the College Art Association (CAA), published a Code of Best Practices for Fair Use for the Visual Arts that attempts to codify an expanded definition of Fair Use as standard industry practice. ASMP has joined with NPPA, PACA, GAG, APA and PPA to express serious concerns about this Code. Mickey Osterreicher, NPPA General Counsel, has discussed the matter with Janet Landay, the program manager for the CAA’s Fair Use Initiative, and a letter has been presented to her outlining our specific objections to the Code. Read the letter. We are seeking a resolution that accurately reflects existing law and current practice, and that clearly separates opinion from established fact. Updates will be issued.
- Take a survey on Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) and support an important effort by NPPA to gather data for submission to the FAA and National Telecommunications and Information Agency (NTIA). ASMP urges everyone with an interest in safety and privacy pertaining to the use of sUAS for news gathering to make your voice heard. Participate now.

Michael Weschler’s work is part of an exhibition: “The I of the Camera” at the Flomenhaft Gallery in New York City through April 25, 2015. Don Jones, Buffalo Bill from “Ten Mavericks” is one of the etched glass prints in the exhibition (photo left) and, according to Michael, “Each of these portraits uncover men who pursued their dreams with unwavering integrity and tenacity, and for that, we recognize them each as mavericks.” More.
Barry Rosenthal is part of the “The I of the Camera” exhibition mentioned above. ‘By using a combination of sculpture and photography and breaking down found object trash into themes of type, color, or whimsy, Rosenthal is able to bring awareness to global issues such as ocean pollution or drug abuse.’ The photo displayed is “Blue Ocean,” 2013. Djinane Alsuwayeh’s project Histoire Urbaines is a series of portraits “of a city that inspired my creative process. A juxtaposition- I was born & lived my artistic education in France; a cultural & artistic hub, boasting one of the world’s most creatively experimental capitals (my negatives as a metaphor to my first steps in photography,) & yet was raised in Kuwait what is considered to be a late developing nation, with a sleepy & stagnant fine arts sector (my silhouetted portraits.)” See the project here.
