ASMP Selects Henry for Leadership Award
trending-now01ASMP has designated outgoing President Shawn Henry as the recipient of the2013 IPC (International Photogaphic Council) Leadership Award .  Shawn has exhibited extraordinary leadership and dedication to the photographic community through his 25 year history of participation with the Eddie Adams Workshop, his seven years of service to EP culminating as VP, and his six years of service to the ASMP Board culminating as president for 2012/2013.  Shawn has been a tireless advocate for the rights of working professionals through his participation and attendance at numerous symposia and trade events. Shawn will be honored along with winners chosen by other professional photography organizations in New York in May.

And The Winner Is…
trending-now02Mark Stahl is the lucky member who renewed before the February deadline and won the Fuji X 10 camera in ASMP’s recent drawing. He is a General Member in Youngstown, Ohio who joined ASMP in November 2011 and renewed for 2013 on Feb 4.  Congrats, Mark! Enjoy the camera!

ON YOUR SIDE

  • General Counsel Victor Perlman has filed ASMP’s comments in response to the Copyright Office’s Notice of Inquiry regarding orphan works. The comments state that “ASMP supports the Reply Comments submitted by ASMP’s sister organization, the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). In particular, ASMP believes that the two keys to minimizing or eliminating entirely the existence of orphan works are persistent attribution and registries.” Read ASMP’s comments here. Read NPPA’s comments here.
  • We are happy to report that the charges against Nicolas Tanner have been dismissed. Nicolas is the Ohio University photojournalism student arrested on Halloween night for photographing an ambulance scene while standing on a public sidewalk. ASMP had joined in a 11/7/12 letter supporting the dismissal.
  • The U.S. Department of Justice has taken the rare step of intervening in a civil rights dispute in Maryland, arguing that a photographer’s recording of police activity in public was constitutionally protected conduct. Civil rights division lawyers filed a “statement of interest” on March 4 in support of photojournalist Mannie Garcia , who filed suit last year against a suburban Maryland police department. Garcia claimed that police unlawfully arrested him in June 2011 as he took photos of the arrest of two Hispanic men. “The United States urges the court to find that both the First and Fourth Amendments protect an individual who peacefully photographs police activity on a public street, if officers arrest the individual and seize the camera of that individual for that activity,” the government attorney wrote.
  • Scam Alert! An ASMP member reports that “Best of Artists,” apparently part of Kennedy Publishing, Williamsburg, VA has gotten in touch with her and other photographers, saying they are doing a professional book and would like to use some of the photographer’s photos. A quick web search to verify the solicitation revealed that the company has now gone out of business.
