ON YOUR SIDE

  • onyourside01bAlthough the battle between drone owners and the FAA continues in terms of laws and regulations, it appears that progress is being made. According to a Bloomberg report, the FAA is looking to expedite the handing out of permits for owners of “low-risk” drones. Commercial flights of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) will be allowed by permitted parties “so long as the devices propose no security risk and are under 55 pounds in weight.” The FAA hopes to have this ruling officially take effect by November, and is also looking to allow the use of even smaller drones before then. Meanwhile, drones are being used by various industries including photography and film making. A recent article in the New York Times focused on drones used for wedding photography.
NOTE: See ASMP Educational Programs below for info on a FREE introductory online class on UAV photography by expert Parker Gyokeres. Don’t miss this opportunity!
  • After a lot of work by a lot of folks, Washington state tax issues have been clarified. Lana K. Rich, Esq. represented members and all photographers in the state on behalf of ASMP. She was integral in communicating concerns, issues and confusion with the tax matters and conveyed those to the Department of Revenue. The result is a much anticipated tax guide. Member Doreen Harper had this to say – “If you question renewing your ASMP membership or weren’t sure about joining, then give it more thought. Without the support of ASMP, Eugene Mopsik and Victor Perlman… Earl & I would be living in a van down by the river. Our membership was invaluable and we would have had a tough time without their advice and support locally and nationally.” She added, “A lot of folks rallied and supported us in our fight and as a result, we won. Thank you to everyone who sent me their rulings, traveled to Olympia, and offered advice and words of encouragement.”
  • Did you work as a freelance photographer for Newsweek back in the 1960’s, 70’s or 80’s? One of our members who did has tried in vain to reclaim assignment negatives and color transparencies of his 80 images. Apparently, with multiple sales of the magazine, the files are in unsorted boxes in New Jersey. If you have images you would like back from Newsweek, contact us at newsweek@asmp.org and ASMP will try to troubleshoot the situation.
  • The Wall Street Journal reports that European Union antitrust regulators are preparing to step up their investigations into Google Inc. on several fronts, including revisiting a proposed settlement over its search-engine practices that has met with unprecedented opposition. Read the article here.
  • Many thanks to ASMP’s New York Chapter for contributing $3000 in proceeds from the Image 13 and Image 14 competitions to the ASMP Legal Action Fund. Treasurer Teresa Kruszewski notes “We are proud to contribute to the ongoing National efforts in keeping the rights of photographers a priority.”
