Today Rep. Hakeem Jeffries engaged in a colloquy with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte and Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler on HR 3945, the CASE Act of 2018 that would create a small claims tribunal within the U.S. Copyright Office to address infringements – a true alternative to Federal Court. Their conversation took place during the markup of the Music Modernization Act and can be heard beginning at the 1:30 mark of this video. It was heartening to hear the Chairman’s support for the bill and Ranking Member Nadler’s noting that he is also in support as a co-sponsor of the bill. I continue to urge individual creators to weigh in with other Members of the House Judiciary Committee to become co-sponsors of HR 3945 and to push for a markup soon as the Chairman suggests. That way, the bill can get to the full House for a vote. I appreciate all the work being done by groups representing visual creators and other individual creators (authors, songwriters etc.) and also appreciate the attention we are receiving from Representatives and their staffs on this important bill.
Watch House Judiciary Committee meeting video now. Cut to 1:30 mark and you’ll see Rep. Jeffries begin speaking.
