Yesterday, I had a great call with chapter leaders to discuss our ongoing efforts to ensure HR3945, the bill that would create a small claims tribunal as an alternative to Federal Court to gain remedies for infringements. We need this bill to move out of the House Judiciary Committee during this session of Congress to a full vote in the House, on to the Senate and ultimately to the President’s desk before September.
Next week, we will be participating in “Small Claims Day”, an initiative organized by the Copyright Alliance to support the efforts of ASMP and other visual groups regarding this bill. Mike Klipper, our advocacy counsel, and I will be back on Capitol Hill meeting with House Members and their staffs to push our agenda.
I need your support to ensure our voices are heard loud and clear. We are a small association by Washington D.C. standards, but we can demonstrate the power of our cause by having 100 emails go to each of the 435 Representatives in the House. Beat the drum, rally your members, family, and friends to email their Representative. We have until Jan. 17, 2018 to make it happen, and we’ve made it easy by creating the #SmallClaimsDay social media campaign. See more at https://www.asmp.org/small-claims-report/advocacy-alert-act-smallclaimsday/.
Your ability to protect your work from infringement in a more meaningful way will only happen if we push hard, now making our voices heard, and showing how much we need this remedy to protect our rights.
