Orphan Works bill dies in committee

The latest Orphan Works bill (the Copyright Modernization Act of 2006, HR 6052) appears to have died in committee. On Wednesday, Sept. 27, the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), announced that he was withdrawing the bill and would reintroduce it in the next session of Congress.

Good news -- nothing happened

The House Judiciary Committee held a markup session without reaching the Orphan Works legislation (now part of the “Copyright Modernization Act of 2006”), despite that bill’s having been placed on the markup calendar. Every day that there is no action on this bill is good for photographers.
