We remember the contributions of two former ASMP members. Gordon Parks became famous outside the photo community; he was also successful at writing novels, directing movies (including the “Shaft” series) and composing symphonies. James Brown was an Ohio journalist who, we are told, was once asked not to enter UPI’s Best Photo contest in order to give others a chance to win.

On Wednesday, March 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the House Intellectual Property Subcommittee will hold a hearing on the recent Copyright Office proposal on “orphan works.” At this hearing, David Trust, CEO of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) will testify. ASMP is in support of his testimony and our General Counsel, Victor Perlman, will be attending the hearing. Last May, photographer Tom Dallal’s suit against the New York Times received a stunning setback when the district court judge dismissed his claims. Fortunately, the appellate court saw things differently. Its decision, issued at the end of February, overturns the district court.
