On Keeping Up with Things – or – How I avoid Work Yet Feel Like I’m Doing Something Useful – or – How I Browse Without Feeling Like a Cow
Some of my browser faves, in no particular order:
British Journal of Photography – http://www.bjp-online.com/
Great news, good interviews, roughly analogous to PDN. Published in a foreign country yet in English; so convenient.
Luminous Landscape – http://luminous-landscape.com/index.shtml
A review and essay site about equipment and aesthetics, all from a users’, practical viewpoint. Not too gear-heady. Well-written and smart. Non-denominational regarding brands.
Elizabeth Avedon – http://elizabethavedon.blogspot.com/
One of the great book and exhibit designers, including photo books.
Communications Arts – http://www.commarts.com/
For many years (and for many of us, still), the best overall resource for graphic design, including illustration, photography, typography, and web design.
Lens – http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/
The New York Times just gets it when it comes to presenting photography. This is a photography blog about the stuff they think is interesting, including lots that’s not from the New York Times. All over the map.
A Photo Editor – http://www.aphotoeditor.com/
One of the best written, most inclusive blogs, very much in support of the working photographer. Occasional guests, including fantastic discussions of actual contracts and negotiations from Wonderful Machine.
A List Apart – http://www.alistapart.com/
The logo says: “For People Who Make Websites”. The Topics list is: Code, Content, Culture, Design, Mobile, Process, User Science. Enough said.
The New York Times – http://www.nytimes.com/
Needs no introduction, but if it did, you might say it’s the best newspaper in the world.
VII – http://www.viiphoto.com/
An agency representing some of the best photojournalists and photographers in the world. Lots, lots, lots of really good work.
The Big Picture – http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/
The first big picture blog. Long essays of big honkin’ photos, the way they oughta be on the web. Just sayin’.
I Love Typography – http://www.ilovetypography.com/
Me too.
Boagworld – http://boagworld.com/
Common-sense geekness about websites for non-geeks as well.
Pro Publica – http://www.propublica.org/
Where some of the best journalism is coming from since all those publications started firing some of the best journalists. Here’s where some of them went.
Monoscope – http://www.monoscope.com/
Menu: Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Photography, Art, Video, Illustration, Fashion. You get the idea.
Barry Schwartz is a photographer, writer, and designer who needs to be reminded daily that inspiration don’t grow on trees yet tries to remember to close the browser and get some work done

I concur – with the addition of the LA Times photo section. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/photography/ They run larger images than the NY Times and have a different POV.
