Photographer and ….

[by Rosh Sillars]

My aha moment at SB3 hit me when I realized that industry changes have challenged photographers to use their creativity to adapt their skills and talents to other industries.  Today, photographers hold their heads high and say, “I’m a photographer and a writer, a videographer, a designer, a teacher or a consultant.”

It is tough to keep the standard of living we once had when we worked solely as photographers.  Technology has lowered the bar of entry to our field as well as many other occupations.

In order to stay competitive, photographers must make their rivals irrelevant by creating a niche that separates their work and services from other photographers. Combining talents is an excellent way to accomplish this goal.

  1. Very true words. I have had to become more of a designer myself. And in doing so, we are confronted with the daunting task of using Photo software packages that are unintuitive and poorly designed. We need to be the “Barbarians at the Gate” to plead for easier to use interfaces and fewer clicks for routine chores like importing images.
