Do You Have a Voice Mail Problem?

[by Jim Cavanaugh]

How many times have you heard people lament “I can’t get a hold of anybody. All I ever get is voice mail”. It can be frustrating until you realize that voice mail is really a perfect way for you to get your message to a client in a clear, concise manner. Just be mentally prepared with your best “elevator briefing” if you get dropped into voice mail. Keep it brief, who, what, why, where, when and how. Make sure you speak clearly and be sure to repeat your phone number.

  1. At our studio we don’t even have voicemail. Whenever you call you get a real person. (There’s a general mailbox to collect any missed calls.) Years ago this was a deliberate attempt to maintain the personal connection. But lately I’m noticing more and more people who want voicemail. They want to be able to leave a detailed message directly for the person they’re calling–as opposed to “This is ___. Ask ___ to call me.” I think it’s one of those situations in which the concept is nice and quaint, but in practice I think we’re not acknowledge the uber-connectedness of our wired world. I think it’s time for a change.

  2. Bill,

I’m a big fan of the direct human connection.

But it’s clear our clients use voice mail for three reasons, they are not there, they are too busy or they are simply screening calls. It’s a fact of business life today. Voice mail simply allows us to leave a direct concise sales message
