Did You Know?
[by Ed McDonald]
You can find a review of the top six (Facebook, Photobucket, Flickr, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter) Social Media Terms of Service agreements online at the ASMP website. The report presents recommended best practices, considerations, common terms used, and hypothetical situations photographers may face when images are posted on social networking sites. Find this on the ASMP site by going to the home page left hand grey column down to “News” then fly-out to Social Media Terms of Service.

Ed:
Terms of Service (TOS) or EULAs (End User License Agreements) are very important, and should always be read before ever uploading your images to a social media site. The EULA Analyzer (http://www.spywareguide.com/analyze/index.php), or TOS comparison analyzer (http://tools.ourmedia.org/wiki/TOS_comparison) might be worth checking out.
Another extremely important factor is that many of the social media and photo sharing services may not preserve your embedded metadata. This is a problem if someone downloads your image from one of these sites, as they may not know who to contact to see about using the image, since the identifying information is no longer in the file.
The members of the controlled vocabulary forum have been conducting a survey of the various social media sites. Links to the preliminary survey results, as well as info on how to participate can be found at:
http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/socialmedia/
Take a look and see if the service you use is listed and if not, please consider adding to the survey.
Thanks,
David
