This is not the usual group of portfolios, whether you find it commercial or not I will leave up to you, but I will say that some of these photographers are very successful….

Thanks. That’s a big list! Are you measuring success as in a level of annual income? If so, how many of them do you think are making 40k or more from their photography (NOT including teaching)?.

Good question, I know that some of these photographers are young artists, some are friends of the person who runs the site, some are well established exhibiting artists and many are working commercially, the best known being Ryan McGinley who makes substantially more than $40,000 and my personal guess, makes well into six figures a year. I can do a little research on the others if anyone is interested.
This work may not look “commercial”, but some of these photographers are hired because of this work to do large ad and editorial jobs.
Think if the kind of photography that was “cutting edge” 10 or 20 years ago, or when you started. Those ideas became main stream and look rather tame now. Well, here is a look at what is being done by some photographers who are making the contemporary work of our time. Use these to keep your mind open, to change your frame of reference, to spark a new idea, a new body of work.
Better yet, make a small book of personal images like
these and put it in the back of your “commercial” portfolio. Let your clients see something different.
