What a great summary! I agree 100% about the sweat equity. Getting "word of mouth" referrals and relationships takes a LOT of time and effort, but it is so worth it. Your return will be ten-fold.

Nicholas,

Facebook fan pages are SEO friendly. As far as posting URL's - remember the golden rule of social media is to provide interesting, relevant information. You can do that by directing someone to your blog which may be insightful. But just to link to your website would be more of a hard sell.

Establishing brand is but the first half of the equation. Managing brand is the second half. Jumping into the Social Media pool is easy enough. Knowing how to swim in the pool is another matter particularly when there are water hazards. Simply put Social Media + You – Brand and Reputation Management = Disaster and is the subject of my recent blog post. I'd be curious to get your input on the topic.

Facebook is only SEO friendly if you post your website/blog URL in a comment or status update. The links in your "Info" section are NoFollow.

How do you go about posting your URL's in comments or updates w/o being seen as spam?

Some very good points about sharing information and not trying to sell too much. I use Twitter a lot and find that being genuine and approachable to be the best way. Sharing links to good topics and to my blog has created a nice following and mailing list.

Something to point out about keeping up on the social media sites. People can find apps and often free downloads to help manage some of these sites. For example I use TweetDeck for Twitter. This allows me to organize who I like to keep track of and also search specific keywords that come up in discussions. This makes things much easier by being more efficient and productive.

Most of all keeping at it and invest time. I see so many people just create an account and post some stuff but then they forget about it. I suggest to give this some investment of time and make it habit.

Thanks for the great post!
