Many thanks to all Members who participated in the Membership Contest and said some wonderful things about ASMP. Don Bensman said, "Being a part of this community of photographers is as valuable as the equipment I take to a photo shoot" and Nadine Priestley stated that "In this tough economy, my choice to continue membership with ASMP is a no brainer." Frank Passanante wrote that "The ASMP 'brand' carries credibility and enhances my reputation." According to Membership Chair Todd Joyce, "I can announce that the Chapter with the highest percentage of members submitting valid entries was Ohio Valley. The Chapter will be awarded a $500 credit in voucher money. There has been a great response and we are working on determining the rest of the winning entries." He added that there will be a display of the entries at the upcoming ASMP Annual Meeting in NY.

  • ASMP Files Statement in Connection With Google Settlement ... On the heels of the recent filing of objections, ASMP, again joined by the Graphic Artists Guild, the Picture Archive Council of America, and the North American Nature Photography Association, has now filed a statement for the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing on "Competition and Commerce in Digital Books." This action follows the group's recent objections filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in opposition to the proposed settlement of the consolidated copyright infringement actions initiated against Google by the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers. ASMP General Counsel Victor Perlman said, "We thought it was vital to inform Congress of the important issues at stake in the proposed settlement with Google and, based on a Statement of Interest filed by the Department of Justice on September 18th, we are hopeful that many of the questions we have raised will be addressed by the courts and by Congress." The statement and other documents filed by ASMP are available here.

ASMP Executive Director Gene Mopsik spent a busy day recently in Washington, D.C., where he attended Copyright Alliance meetings with representatives from Congress. Mopsik reports, "After speaking with the General Counsel for Senator Jeff Sessions, I believe that his office is sensitive to intellectual property issues, and welcomes further knowledge and information." He added that "Majority Leader Harry Reid's office indicated that due to the many Bills ahead of orphan works, there is not likely to be action during the upcoming legislative year." Mopsik will be a Speaker at the upcoming Orphan Works public discussion at the New York City Bar Association in conjunction with Columbia Law School's Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts.

ASMP General Counsel Vic Perlman was a panelist at the New York Law School on the Google Book Search Case. Perlman gave ASMP's perspective on the proposed Google Settlement. He also attended a Status Conference on the proposed Google Settlement which was held in New York before Judge Chin.

ASMP's Board has approved $150,000 award to the PLUS Coalition for the development and implementation of their PLUS Registry, a resource providing unique searchable identifiers and image recognition to determine an image creator's name, contact information and usage rights. The award was made possible through funds received from the Author's Coalition of America (ACA) designated for use solely in industry education and advocacy. According to PLUS Coalition President & CEO Jeff Sedlik, "This very significant award from ASMP in support of the PLUS Registry will benefit all photographers and their customers by linking images to owners and rights information." The Registry is currently under development and will be launched in early 2010.

Email Scams Target Photographers
If it sounds too good to be true — it probably is. The scams, which had been primarily targeting the wedding/portrait industry, are now taking aim at publication/commercial photography. So, beware of web queries that seem questionable, especially those that ask for your help in banking or in the disposition of funds!
