  • ASMP, joined by several sister organizations and individuals, filed a class action copyright infringement suit against Google, Inc. last week. According to Executive Director Eugene Mopsik, “We strongly believe that our members, and those of the other organizations, whose livelihoods are significantly and negatively impacted, deserve to have representation in this landmark issue.Read more

  • Recently, Representative Dan Lipinski (D – Illinois) introduced the Securing Cabin Baggage Act (H.R. 2870) to standardize the dimensions of carry-on baggage and personal items allowed onto passenger aircraft. This bill has potential implications for professional photographers and their equipment.

  • Scam Alert: A member was alarmed when he received two emails claiming copyright infringement filed against him in court. Apparently, it's “phishing bait” trying to lure respondents. The senders are from crosbyhiggins.com so be alert to this and let General Counsel Vic Perlman know of any further activity.

 
Board Highlights
 
  The next meeting of ASMP's Board of Directors will be held April 16 – 18 in Philadelphia. Congratulations to incoming Board members Kevin Lock, Steve Whittaker, and Joseph Pobereskin. The Board of Directors has elected their officers for the coming year: President Richard Kelly, 1st Vice President Jim Cavanaugh, 2nd Vice President Gail Mooney, Treasurer Todd Joyce and Secretary Shawn Henry.

  • ASMP President Richard Kelly and Education Director Susan Carr participated in the 2010 Fotofest event in Houston and received high praise for their workshop, Beyond Print, which ASMP co-sponsored and featured a presentation on copyright. Event organizers said – “…You made it very obvious why art photographers should be part of ASMP.” “Your lecture was engaging, informative and inspiring!” There was standing room only and much discussion among the audience of more than 100 people.

  • Michael Manheim has a new book out, and one on the press. See-Saw Sampler can be viewed at www.michaelphilipmanheim.com where his upcoming book, In a Labyrinth The Dance of the Butoh can be previewed. The National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, NY will have an exhibition featuring Labyrinth through March 2011.

  • Last month Jeff Schultz celebrated his 30th anniversary as the Official Iditarod Volunteer Photographer. He has photographed in conditions ranging from freezing winds to zero visibility snow storms from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska.

ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik attended the WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographer International) 2010 Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas in March, which was also the 30th anniversary of the organization. Judy Hermann, Jay Kinghorn and Blake Discher also attended and made well-received presentations.

Eugene Mopsik traveled to Washington DC to attend a meeting of the Copyright Alliance, for which he is a Board Member. He also attended the Annual Copyright Clearance Center Symposium in New York City with ASMP General Counsel Vic Perlman.

The 1st China International Digital Photographic Art Exhibition
Li Shui, the “first Town of Photography” in China will hold this exhibition to provide more exchanges chances to photographers worldwide and to promote the development of photography.
