Sessions offers free online design guides

Sessions Online Schools of Art and Design announces two free libraries of instructional design content for designers at all skill levels. The POP! Visual Design Guide Library and the Art & Design Video Tutorials Library are part of a broad initiative by Sessions to offer tools and resources to the global community of design students, even if they are not enrolled in one of Sessions 70+ design classes or 15 Certificate Programs.

Other components of the initiative include the launch of DesignSessions Community and DesignSessions: Notes on Design blog, both of which offer professional design advice and interaction from some of the most talented designers and design editors in the design world. All of Sessions-published design resources are created in collaboration with the faculty of Sessions Online Schools of Art and Design.

Sessions offers classes and certificate programs in graphic design, Web design, multimedia, business marketing design, and digital arts. It was founded in 1997 with the goal of bringing new media design education to graphic and Web designers worldwide, through online education. Sessions is accredited by the Distance Education Training Council (www.DETC.org) and the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools (MSCSS) and is the first of only two online schools licensed by the New York State Department of Education.

In memoriam: Joel Brodsky

Joel Brodsky, 67, a photographer whose memorable album-cover pictures of Jim Morrison, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, and dozens of other performers helped define the visual image of popular music in the 1960s and ’70s, died of a heart attack March 1 at his home in Stamford, Conn. Look3 photo festival to debut in June

Created by well-known photographer Michael “Nick” Nichols (National Geographic, etc.), Look3 — Festival of the Photograph will be a 3-day program of exhibitions, outdoor projections, master classes, interviews with world-famous photographers and special events that will transform the downtown of historic Charlottesville, Virginia into a “living image.”

Premiering June 7 - 9, 2007, the Festival will showcase the work of many of the world’s most celebrated photographers and exciting new artists, with images ranging from the fields of photojournalism to fine art. NPR’s Alex Chadwick will interview this year’s featured photographers William Allard, Sally Mann and Eugene Richards on three separate evenings at the Paramount Theater.

The Festival will provide an immersive experience with shows virtually everywhere: in the trees, projected in storefront windows, on the sides of buildings, and in all the galleries. There are limited Festival Passes available so visitors are encouraged to make plans soon.

National Geographic opens online print store

The National Geographic Photo Store is an online commerce site that offers more than 25,000 photographs from the National Geographic image collection, ranging from the earliest days of National Geographic Magazine to the latest edition on the newsstands. !!194!! !!160!!

The site is operated by Pictopia, a service business specializing in scanning, printing and retailing for the photo industry. Prices on the NGS site are not particularly cheap compared with other mass-produced art. Rather, the site offers choice: print sizes from 10 to 30 inches, optionally framed and matted with your choice of materials, and of course a tremendous range of subject matter.

If your taste runs in a different direction, check out the Edmunds’ Inside Line photo store. Same approach to online sales, but the subject matter is everything automotive.
