Photo 612 to hold third annual Holiday Art show on Jan 13

Photo 612, a gallery in suburban Philadelphia, is hosting its 3rd annual Holiday Art Show & Sale. Past shows have included the works of reknowned photographic artists and masters such as Robert Asman, E.C. Adams, Neela Kuhn, Keith Sharp, Steven Begleiter and Leah MacDonald, plus works of local artists Kelly Ryan and Steve Sharp. This year will prove to be just as educational and exceptional; new works by Rita Bernstein, E.C. Adams, Reginald Wickham and Leah MacDonald are on display. Local artists Kelly & Tara Ryan, Steve Sharp and Richard Bell also have works showing. Staying true to its values of being a starting block for emerging artists, the gallery will also have the works of budding talents on display.

Last year, a portion of the sales was donated to Philabundance. This year, artist James Ingraham will be donating proceeds from his image titled The Promise to a Breast Cancer organization.

Photo 612 invites all to celebrate the diversity found in art and photography. The event is Saturday, January 13, from 1-3 pm. It’s held at 612 Station Ave, Haddon Heights; wine and light fare is generously being provided by Sam’s Club. All are welcome!

Summer job opening for staff photographer

Brevard Music Center is a seven-week summer institute and festival. Each year, 400 young musicians come to Brevard for intense study and performance. The more than 80 concerts range from orchestra to opera, chamber music to pops. The Music Center is situated on a 140-acre picturesque campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

The staff photographer is responsible for (among other things) covering daily performances — such as orchestra, opera and chamber music concerts — as well as such non-public events as private lessons, rehearsals and lectures. The photographer is expected to capture images of daily student and faculty life, such as practicing, mealtimes and other curricular activities. Photography of receptions and other special events may be required.

Qualifications include two years' experience in photojournalism (performance work preferred) and some knowledge of classical music. The photographer must provide his/her own digital camera and computer gear. The pay is $2,250 plus room and board for the seven weeks (June 18 to August 5). Note that the Center will own all copyrights to the images.

For more info, contact Emma Candelier, Brevard's Communications Officer, at ecandelier@brevardmusic.org or phone (828) 862-2130. The deadline for applications is April 6.

SAA votes to expand its mission

The Stock Artists Alliance has adopted the change to its association bylaws that was proposed by the SAA Board of Directors. The association’s mission had previously been centered on the business of licensing Rights Managed images. Going forward, SAA will extend membership to all professional stock photographers. It will also seek to analyze and understand the whole range of business choices in stock photography, including Royalty Free.

To reflect the broader mission, SAA has also revised its membership qualifications. Any independent professional photographer who is involved or interested in stock photography is invited to apply. Reduced membership dues for students and emerging professionals are also available.

SAA continues to advocate that the best business models for photographers are ones that manage usage and protect their intellectual property. SAA will continue to provide multi-faceted support for RM licensing as well as industry-wide leadership on the full range of issues affecting stock photographers.

In SAA’s press announcement, 2006 SAA President David Sanger stated, “the principles of SAA include fair business practices, an equitable split of revenue, shared risk and responsibility, mutual trust and respect, and recognition of the rights of the creator. These have not changed and they transcend any specific licensing model. We believe that the same principles should apply to all stock photography contracts.”

Not everyone was favorably impressed by the SAA announcement. A sarcastic blog posting at the EP-UK site compared the shift to “the Temperance Society discovering that its leaders are partial to a drop of the hard stuff.”

Dude, study rodeo photography with David Wells

ASMP member David H Wells is offering an experimental “bare bones workshop” in digital photography at the Tucson Rodeo in February.

The Tucson Rodeo started as the La Fiesta de los Vaqueros (Celebration of the Cowboys) in 1925 and has grown to a nine-day celebration centered on one of the top 20 professional rodeos in North America. The rodeo is the first major outdoor event on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association schedule. It gives visitors an opportunity to see real-life cowboys and cowgirls display their ability in the only sport in the world developed from actual working skills. The Rodeo events include bull riding, bareback and saddle-bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping and women’s barrel racing.

While the rodeo arena events are fascinating, the preparation, warm-ups and cool-downs, and the general cowboy culture are equally interesting to photograph. So is February 22nd’s Tucson Rodeo Parade, which is the community’s most beloved tradition, and remains Tucson’s finest display of the Old West.

The class will be limited to eight students to ensure that everyone receives adequate personal attention and guidance. Each student is required to pay (in advance) $100 per day with a three-day minimum (and up to 7 days maximum.) After the three-day base cost is paid, additional days can be paid a day at a time, enabling students to add days as they choose.

In addition, the students are responsible for their own airfares, hotel reservations, meals, and rodeo admission fees. Admission fees vary by day and by seating area. Information on the rodeo is posted at tucsonrodeo.com.

Workshops are offered from Feb 17th to 23rd. The best days are Feb 19-21, as the fewest spectators are there, though there are plenty of competitors. The weekend events are generally broadcast, specifically 2/25, meaning the access photographers have will be much more restricted. A telephoto will be a big help throughout the class.

For more info, email David at David@DavidHWells.com or visit his workshop web site.
