ASMP to present seminar series at Apple stores
ASMP will present a seminar series by 18 extraordinary member photographers this fall and winter. The talks, to be held at the Apple Stores in New York, Chicago and San Francisco, are part of Apple Computer’s Pro Sessions event series. Mark your calendars, coordinate your schedules! More info.
On September 25, the first three in the series will take place. The downtown Chicago Apple store will feature Victor Skrebneski, whose diverse body of work has included everything from wildly inventive fashion images as the exclusive photographer for Estee Lauder, to starkly revealing portraits and haunting cityscapes. On the same day, the San Francisco Apple store near Union Square will play host to Morton Beebe, who has covered the world, combining advertising assignments for his corporate clients with editorial assignments for Travel & Leisure, National Geographic and others. And in the New York Apple store on Prince St. will be Jay Maisel, whose name has become synonymous with vibrant color photography that uses light and gesture to create countless unforgettable images for advertising, editorial and corporate communications.
At each session, the presenter will show slides and talk about portfolio marketing, assessing the needs of photo editors, and ways of succeeding in this challenging field. Admission is free and open to the public; space is on a first-come first-served basis.

In memoriam: Marion E Warren
Life member Marion Warren, a visual historian of Chesapeake Bay culture and environs, died on September 8, 2006. He was 86 years old. He is survived by a son, Paul Donald Warren; two daughters, Nancy Warren Atkinson and Mame Warren; six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Although he would become known as “the Ansel Adams of the Chesapeake,” Warren was born on the Montana prairy and spent boyhood years in Missouri. He took photography classes at Washington University in St. Louis and, when World War II broke out, he was assigned to a Navy photography unit near Washington, DC. He married Mary Giblin, a Navy WAVE, in 1943. After the war, the couple moved to Annapolis and operated a portrait and commercial photography studio in their basement.
Starting in 1970, he published several books on Maryland and waterfront topics. During the 1980s, Warren spent 10 years documenting the lives of the Bay’s watermen and, in 1994, he published a book titled Bringing Back the Bay (with his daughter Mame as coauthor) that became a classic.
The family suggests that memorial gifts may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Philip Merrill Environmental Center or to Hospice of the Chesapeake, both located in Annapolis, MD. Condolences may be forwarded via www.mewarren.com.
An Exhibition Opening and Celebration of Mr. Warren’s life will be held at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (801 Chase Street, Annapolis MD) on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at 5:30 p.m.
There is a nice appreciation of Warren’s life in the Baltimore Sun for September 10, 2006. You can see some of his pictures at the Autumn Publishing site.

Louisiana photo competition begins
Louisiana Photographic Arts has opened its annual Fall Competition — this year’s proceeds to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims and Habitat for Humanity. Prizes are awarded separately for color or b&w photos in three categories: photo-journalism, nature, and an open category.
The requirements are few: It’s open to all photographers, with no theme or subject limitations. You can enter as many images as you please, including published works if you retained this right. And you can send slides (in plastic slide sheets, but not glass mounts) or prints (sizes from 5x7 up to 16x20). The rules seem to suggest that digital files should be printed out for submission. Please do not send originals, and you are responsible for insurance.
The entry fee is $20 for up to four entries, and the deadline is December 1.
More information is on the Louisiana Photographic Arts web site.
‘Reflections’ by Caponigro at Hallmark Museum
Photographer and digital print artist John Paul Caponigro will exhibit thirty-six images of his large-scale color work at the Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography in Turners Falls, MA, from September 28th thru December 17th.
The prints are drawn from two recent series: “New Work, 2005” and “Exhalations” completed in 2006. Working with traditional film, he often alters the resulting images using the digital platform to de-emphasize, enhance or change specific colors, or to add, delete or combine pictorial elements. Caponigro is internationally recognized as a pioneer in developing many of the techniques employed in producing the images in this exhibit.
Working primarily in what he terms “wastelands,” his work is a call for recognition of the connection between humankind and our fragile earth. His images reveal the beauty that is inherent to the natural world but overlooked or lost to inattention, and it’s the strength of this beauty that Caponigro finds so regenerative to the human spirit and an inspiration for hope.
The museum will host an Artist’s Reception, with live music and hors d’oeuvres on Saturday, September 30th, from 1 to 7 pm; and, from 7:15 to 8:45 an illustrated Artist’s Talk, with refreshments. All events are free and parking is available at no charge. The exhibition and Artist’s Reception will be held at the museum, located at 85 Avenue A, in downtown Turners Falls, Massachusetts. The evening Artist’s Talk will take place in the lecture hall at Hallmark Institute of Photography, Industrial Boulevard, Turners Falls.
More information about John Paul Caponigro can be found on his web site. Additional information about the exhibition may be obtained by contacting laurie@hmcp.org or by phoning 413.863.0009.
Stock Artists Alliance active on next generation of rights-based icensing
Stock Artists Alliance reports that Getty Images has revised its “rights ready” model in response to concerns voiced by SAA and photographers about the unlimited license term originally proposed by the company. The rights ready agreement, launched in late August in the new Riser collection, now has a ten-year term limit. While SAA had urged Getty to cap licenses at five years or less, this revision has addressed the organization’s chief concern about tying up images for an indefinite future.
Simplified licensing models will also pave the way for industry standardization. As a member of PLUS (Picture Licensing Universal System, SAA actively supports the work of the industry-wide Coalition to create and develop industry standards for image licensing. Currently, SAA Executive Director Betsy Reid chairs a PLUS committee that has, in consultation with various organizations and stakeholders, developed a series of universal license packages for use in image licensing. The packages include simplified options for duration and region. Once approved by PLUS Coalition members later this year, PLUS License Packs will be released as an international image licensing standard.
Founded in 2002, SAA has emerged as an outspoken advocate for stock photographers seeking to maintain the value of their intellectual property in a rapidly changing business environment. SAA stresses the need for the stock photography industry to be innovative in developing stock licensing models that meet the needs of all participants - photographers, distributors and photo buyers.
Studio Photography features Robert Reck
ASMP member Robert Reck is featured in the current issue of Studio Photography. A nice write-up, cover photo and nine images inside make for an impressive article. Congratulations, Robert!
