Holga Challenge: clean your fridge and freezer

Yes, that’s right, get out the ice pick and free up your old, outdated (and now technologically extinct) film and sent it to us for new life in a Holga at the hands of a student. A generous donation from Eric Klein (www.kleinproductions.com), sparked the idea for this contest, which is organized by ASMP’s Chicago chapter and the Harrington College of Design. Helix, Calumet, CSW Film Systems and Legion Papers have already pledged support. What’s more, the chapter invites everybody who has donated film to be on hand to judge the photographs.

Harrington will pay the shipping; if you would like to donate film, please email Dirk Fletcher with any questions.

ASMP’s Victor Perlman to speak at POMA confab

ASMP’s General Counsel, Victor Perlman, will speak at the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) annual business conference, this year held on August 24-27 in Springfield, MO. His topic, titled “Are you fully protected?” will cover the reasons for, and the process of, registering your copyrights.

POMA includes in its membership a wide range of communicators who “believe in, defend, support and promote the heritage of hunting, fishing, shooting and traditional outdoor sports through writing, photography and other means.” Some of the conference sessions are oriented toward photographers, while others are aimed at freelance writers; both groups face similar problems in obtaining assignments, negotiating fees and protecting their work from infringement.

New Photo Business Book by Leslie Burns-Dell’Acqua

Burns Auto Parts-Consultants is proud to announce the release of Business Basics for the Successful Commercial Photographer: or how to use your left brain, too. Written by BAP owner and internationally known consultant Leslie Burns-Dell’Acqua, Business Basics for the Successful Commercial Photographer is a small book geared to students and emerging photographers who, like so many pros, are not always getting much information about the business side of the photo business in their coursework. This book will fill in a lot of those blanks, introducing issues like copyright, marketing, paperwork, business entity types, and more. While it does not explore these topics in depth, it does give readers the basics and points them to other sources for more information.

When asked about her reasons for writing the book, Ms. Burns-Dell’Acqua said, “My goal was to get the basic information to as many people as I could, thus planting the seeds for positive, effective, life-long professional business practices rather than forcing newer photographers either to read dense business tomes or just wing it when it comes to their businesses.”

The book is published via Lulu.com — a new way of approaching publishing. “I decided to use Lulu.com rather than traditional publishers to control the process more,” said Ms. Burns-Dell’Acqua, continuing “I could write what I wanted in a style that probably wouldn’t be acceptable to a traditional publisher but one which will resonate with students and emerging pro photographers. And the process has been great.”

Business Basics for the Successful Commercial Photographer: or how to use your left brain, too is available from Lulu.com at http://www.lulu.com/content/347372 (preview pages available) in both print and downloadable forms.

Leslie Burns-Dell’Acqua is the owner of Burns Auto Parts-Consultants, a business and marketing consultancy for creative professionals, particularly commercial photographers. Based in San Diego, CA, Ms. Burns-Dell’Acqua has developed a sizable following via her online “Manuals,” regular column in Picture magazine, and innumerable professional photographer forum postings. Known for her straight-shooting style, she encourages positive change in creative businesses around the globe. For more information, go to burnsautoparts.com.

Autumn on the coast of Maine

Early October is the best time to visit Maine — the tourists are gone, the foliage is prime — and that’s when the Santa Fe Workshops is hosting a week-long session led by Maine photographer Kip Brundage. Participants will travel the back roads of the Phippsburg peninsula and the waters of Casco Bay. Our home for the week is the gracious Sebasco Harbor Resort, featuring breathtaking views of coastal shoreline and daily field trips to neighboring Popham and Seawall Beaches, Totman Cove, Cundy’s Harbor, Quahog Bay, Eagle Island, Bath, and the Kennebec River.

This workshop is especially tailored for amateur photographers interested in working with digital capture and workflow. An on-site, state-of-the-art digital lab, supported by Microsoft, Adobe, and Dell, provides each participant with a personal laptop workstation. A portfolio is not required for admission. The package price is $2,595; including tuition, use of digital lab, location fees, accommodations for six nights (single occupancy), a Sunday welcome dinner, and Friday lobster dinner. This workshop is limited to 14 participants. To register or gather more information on call (505) 983-1400 or go online to www.santafeworkshops.com.

Pete Turner to showcase at George Eastman House

From August 12, 2006, through February 4, 2007, the photographs of longtime ASMP member Pete Turner will be on display. The exhibition is titled “Pete Turner: Empowered by Color.” And at 6 pm on September 15, Turner will give a lecture titled “Fifty Years of Color” in the Dryden Theater. A book signing and reception will follow. GEH members get in free (and may bring two guests); the price to the public is $10, or $8 for students.

This fall, book publisher Rizzoli will release The Color of Jazz, highlighting memorable album covers that benefited from Turner’s quest for bold color. A significant number were the result of Turner’s collaboration with famed jazz producer Creed Taylor, who was the first to place Turner’s images in a musical context. The albums, many of which are out of print, include such greats as Count Basie, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Quincy Jones, Freddie Hubbard and Steely Dan. Hardcover price will be $45; contact Rizzoli for availability.
