David Alan Harvey featured at NikonNet

NikonNet’s Legends Behind the Lens series has added ASMP member David Alan Harvey. (The Legends page doesn’t make it easy to find anyone — Harvey is third from the left on the sixth row — but here’s a direct link.) Harvey tells an interesting story about how he works, and has chosen some fascinating images for the slideshow on his page.

Past “Legends” in the series include Kevin Gilbert, Nancy Brown, Joe Buissink, Steven Weinberg, B. Moose Peterson, Eddie Adams, Jay Maisel and Howard Bingham.

Aspen Photo Workshops sets summer schedule

In memoriam: Tana Hoban

On January 27, 2006, longtime ASMP member (and recipient of ASMP’s Lifetime Achievement award) Tana Hoban died at a hospice in Paris. She was 88 years old. She is survived by her husband, John Morris.

Hoban was born in Philadelphia and attended the School of Design for Women (now the Moore College of Art) there. In 1938, she traveled to England and Holland to study painting for a time. She then moved back to Philadelphia and began a career as a graphic artist and illustrator. By 1946, though, she had switched to photography. In 1949, her photographs of children were exhibited in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and, that same year, she joined ASMP.

She became very successful as an advertising and cover photographer. In 1959, she was named one of the top 10 female photographers in the U.S. In 1960, she participated in the White House Conference on Children and Youth. She taught at the Annenberg School of the University of Pennsylvania from 1966 to 1969.

Beginning in 1970, she turned from making photographs of children to making photographs for children, creating a series of innovative books, starting with Shapes and Things (1970) and going on to win accolades for Is It Red? Is It Yellow? Is It Blue? (1978) and Take Another Look (1981).

The Washington Post ran a very nice obituary; here it is.

Casting call: fashion photographer to star in reality show

Making It Big, a prime-time television series seen across North America, is looking for three talented, up-and-coming fashion photographers. All three young professionals will be showcased in the Making It Big Fashion Photography episode — but only one will land the career opportunity of a lifetime.

Making It Big provides the thing money can’t buy: access. For example, the winner of the Entertainment Reporting episode flew to L.A. for meetings with Extra host Dayna Devon, executives at Dick Clark Productions and a top William Morris agent. The Fashion Design winner flew to New York where his work was displayed in the window of Saks Fifth Avenue’s flagship store. Meetings were also booked with the chain’s fashion director, its buyers and New York designer Cynthia Steffe.

Will it be you in the Fashion Photography episode?

To qualify you must have:

X-Rite, GretagMacbeth to merge

The two leading makers of color calibration hardware (spectrophotometers and colorimeters) have agreed to a merger. Under the agreement, Michigan-based X-Rite Inc will acquire Amazys Holding AG, the parent corporation of GretagMacbeth, for about $280 million. We don’t expect any immediate change in the two companies’ product lines.

Text database puts member’s stock online

ASMP member Saxon Holt wanted to market his stock archive online, but did not need an image database — his archive is mostly film. His solution: “As I become more involved in stock photo sales I have decided to use a fairly unique approach because I have a 20-year text database (Hindsight’s StockView) cataloging my 200,000 images. At PhotoBotanic, my new website, we have created a text-oriented online database for editors and buyers to search my entire catalogue. All my work pre-dates digital and, while I am now scanning my best images, I can never scan them all. This website provides a way to find everything.

“I am fortunate to have a good reputation in my niche, horticulture market, so clients know that if they can find a photo captioned in my text database, the actual film will be high quality. This approach may not work for photographers with generalist files, but many of my photos are unique botanic subjects, so I am hoping this on-line database will be useful.

“There is still much work to do to promote my work in the digital world, including participating in our own Find A Photograph feature, but having built a text based catalogue with Hindsight’s StockView I believe PhotoBotanic has a firm foundation.”
