Kevin Reilly tapped for Fuji Talent Team
Fujifilm has added ASMP member Kevin Reilly to its Talent Team, a group of photographer-spokesmen who test new Fuji products and also help introduce them to the market. Team members get the latest software, technical support, discounts on Fuji products and listing in the Fuji bookstore; they also make themselves available for speaking engagements.
Kevin’s studio, Oh! Reilly Photography, specializes in studio still life images, portraiture, model with product and architectural photography. For the past 14 years, he has been supplying images for Fuji advertising campaigns.
IPC Award goes to Gary Gladstone
The International Photographic Council (IPC), a non-governmental organization of the United Nations, recognized five distinguished photographers at its 7th annual Professional Photographer Leadership Awards luncheon at the United Nations last month.
The ASMP winner was NY board member Gary Gladstone. He has seven hardcover books to his name. His book, Passing Gas and Other Towns Along the American Highway, is soon to be featured on PBS. In addition to being a founding member and first chairman of PHOTIB, and a co-founder of Photo News Network, he was among the first to define “corporate” as a photo specialty in the early ’70s. When he’s not shooting, Gary’s passion is flying and aviation; he is a licensed instrument pilot.
The APA winner was Jeff Sedlik, currently the organization’s chief advisor on licensing and copyright, and a professor of photography at Art Center College of Design. PPA’s winner was past president Marvel Nelson. The WHNPA winner was Peter Souza, who covered Afghanistan, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and the U.S. presidential campaigns of 2000 and 2004 for the Chicago Tribune. The WPPI winner was Tony Corbell, who now serves as director of the West Coast School of Photography.
Also honored were nine legendary image makers who have died since 2004: Eddie Adams, Richard Avedon, Don Blair, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dean Collins, Carl Mydans, Helmut Newton, Francesco Scavullo and George Silk. Alice Miller, the editorial director for Cygnus Imaging Group, presented a DVD showcasing their iconic images.

Pictured here are the 2005 IPC Leadership Awards honorees, with other dignitaries, as follows: (Back row, l-r): Jeff Sedlik (APA winner), Peter Souza (WHNPA winner), Tony Corbell (WPPI winner), Gary Gladstone (ASMP winner). Exposure, the quarterly newsletter of ASMP’s New Jersey chapter, has captured a first prize for newsletters in the NJ Advertising CLub’s 37th annual Jersey Awards competition. The winning entry was the Fall 2004 issue, which featured a surreal cover shot of night light and movement by member Kimberlee Piper.

PhotoAssistant.net, a free online database of commercial photography assistants, reports that it now has more than 1,300 members. Its web site has recently been overhauled to allow assistants to update their own profiles, upload PDF resumes and specify the kinds of jobs they are qualified for. The new site relies heavily on Flash.
Photography and Security is topic of public radio segment
WHYY’s Joel Rose reports on photographers who claim they were harassed by police for taking pictures of “sensitive” sites while on public property. Among those interviewed are ASMP’s own Gene Mopsik and Victor Perlman. If you missed it, you can replay the segment here (requires RealPlayer).

The exhibit was developed by UCR in cooperation with the NHRA and sponsored by the Automobile Club of Southern California. PDIA offers ‘Print to Sell’ webinar
Earlier this month, the Professional Digital Imaging Association introduced a one-hour online seminar (webinar) called “Print to Sell: Making and Marketing Your Prints for Maximum Profit.” The initial presentation was over-subscribed, so PDIA has made it freely available for streaming playback.
The session is presented by a self-taught artist and experimental printmaker, Kat Silverglate, whose marketing savvy took her from full-time attorney to full-time artist in less than three years. PDIA says that Kat may also offer a range of related topics in future webinars.
What was Adobe thinking?
The Adobe Stock Photo service, which is part of the Bridge component of Creative Suite 2, gives photo buyers a quick link to royalty-free stock. In an essay posted by The Stock Asylum, James Alexander, the Director of Adobe Stock Photos, acknowledges the concerns that photographers have raised about this. He says that RF was merely the first step, done because RF’s simple licensing and pricing schemes made it easy to implement. Rights-managed stock licenses are more complex and far from standardized, but Adobe is working (with PLUS and others) to bring that business model into the fold as well.
Morton Beebe to show Maasai Oral History Project
On Tuesday, June 28, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm, the Apple store in San Francisco and the Northern California chapter of ASMP will host a presentation of the Maasai Oral Histories Project video. The Maasai have roamed Africa freely for centuries, ignoring national boundaries; but now they are increasingly restricted. The project’s goal is to record (in high-def video) the myths, rituals, stories, laws and beliefs that are traditionally passed on by senior elders.
The presenters will be photographer Morton Beebe (a former ASMP National Board member) and editor Tim Kelly. The location is One Stockton Street, San Francisco, CA; phone 415-392-0202. More info about the Project and Beebe’s role in it can be found on the ASMP Northern California web site.
