Applying for the ASMP-NY mentor program is done via this website.
- Step 1: Register as a participant
- To participate in the mentor program, you will first need to register. Only current ASMP-NY members are eligible to participate. You'll be asked for your login credentials (the same as you would use to log on to the national website) to verify your membership.
- The system will then display a form where you can edit the contact info you want your mentor to use. This does not need to be the same as your standard ASMP contact info. Changing the info on this form will not update your record in the ASMP member database.
- Step 2: Pay the fee
- The application fee is $15. This fee is not refundable.
- Note that the credit card form displays your address in editable fields. The address you should use in this form is whatever address your credit card issuer has in its files. If the address does not match what the bank expects to see, your card will probably be declined. (Again, changing the info on the credit form does not update your record anywhere else.)
- Step 3: Upload images & files
- After the application fee has been paid, you will be able to upload images and files to support your application. The server limits you to 15 files in total. If you wish, you may delete existing files in order to upload better ones. You will need:
• 10 images
• a rèsumé
• a letter/statement of purpose explaining why the program will benefit you and what you plan to accomplish while in the program. - Text documents (preferably PDFs) are uploaded just like images. The server treats any file whose name ends in .jpg or .jpeg as an image; everything else is treated as a document.
- Step 4: Submit the application
- When the images and documents are in place, you may submit your application to your first and second choice of mentors. The system will notify both mentors, equally and at the same time. Obviously, it is up to each mentor how and when to respond.
- Mentors may not be able to respond immediately to your application, for a great variety of reasons. Please allow four to six weeks. If you have questions, please contact ASMP-NY at info@asmpny.org.
- If and when a mentor accepts you as a student, the system will notify you by email.
- Technical considerations
- We request that you submit only JPEG images.
setting the color space to Adobe RGB (1998) using Photoshop's "Convert to Profile" command (or equivalent in other software). Other color spaces are OK if you embed the ICC profile with the image.
sizing the image to exactly 800 pixels high or wide (whichever is larger). Other sizes will work, but the image will be scaled to that size by the server.
adjusting sharpness for best impact at that size.
adding your copyright and creator metadata using Photoshop's "File Info" command (or equivalent). The server preserves metadata in the large version of the image, but strips it from the small thumbnail.
saving the optimized file. Set the quality level as high as possible, but make sure the total file size stays below 2 MB. Larger files cannot be uploaded due to server restrictions.
