Best Practices in the Photo Industry
Photographers, like publishers, advertisers, art buyers and other users of creative imagery, are participating in the industry’s evolution toward a common set of business and technical standards.
PLUS Glossary
PLUS, the Picture Licensing Universal System, is a coalition of industry vendors and nonprofit organizations working to develop a series of tools for the stock-image licensing business. The first tool is a freely accessible, online Glossary of licensing terms.
Still to come are the Media Matrix, which will uniformly specify international media categories and organize them by type, and the machine-readable License Format. The goal of the entire system is to let licensors and licensees leverage new technologies to write, read, track, store and analyze the details of every image license much more easily than ever before.
UPDIG recommendations
The Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidelines aim to clarify issues affecting accurate reproduction and management of digital image files. Although they largely reflect a photographerÕs perspective, anyone working with digital images should find them useful.
American Institute of Architects recommendations
AIA issues a series of Best Practice documents covering many aspects of the architectural professions. Section 6 ("Firm Planning") includes several that cover the business aspects of working with a professional photographer:
