ASMPNY BrainTrust Program
ASMPNY's groundbreaking BrainTrust Program has been in operation for almost a year. Members meet in small focused peer groups where they share information and advice, and help each other work towards career goals.
What is the ASMPNY BrainTrust?
Feel like you don't have enough significant interaction with your peers? Having pricing or other business related issues? Want to develop your career but don't know exactly how?
The BrainTrust is a monthly focused peer group (up to 8 members) with the goal of sharing information and advice, and helping each other work towards career goals. Make some connections, exchange information about resources, bounce some ideas around, and get constructive advice from your peers. Topics include marketing advice, portfolio reviews, negotiation, rights, or how to research and shoot personal work, etc. -- it's up to you!
Meetings are for ASMP Associate, General, or Emerging Members only.
A note on attendance and participation: we are all busy photographers, and of course things come up. But if you are consistently not attending the BrainTrust, you may have to give up your seat, at the discretion of the group. Like anything, you get out of it what you put in! Please consider in your own judgment whether you can genuinely contribute towards the professional development of your colleagues.
How a BrainTrust is organized and run
Each BrainTrust meets at a certain day each month, refer to the individual BrainTrust sites below for more details. Groups are held in informal spaces, often a member’s home or studio. The ASMPNY provides a small budget for food and drink. A typical meeting involves a certain amount of time for each participant to discuss their work or questions related to it. Sometimes the group selects one topic to discuss in general. The format is not fixed and it is up to the participants to set the agenda.
How to join a BrainTrust
In order to keep the ASMPNY BrainTrusts working consistently we try to find a good fit for interested participants. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the current BrainTrust groups and then fill out some basic information below, indicating your top preference as to which BrainTrust you would like to join.
Q: Is there any cost to the BrainTrust? No, it is free for ASMP Associate, General, or Emerging Members only. Sorry no students.
Q: Do I have to attend every month? We are all busy photographers, and of course things come up. But if you are consistently not attending the BrainTrust, you may have to give up your seat, at the discretion of the group. Like anything, you get out of it what you put in!
Q: I am a part-time photographer, is there a group for me? While officially you can participate in any BrainTrust, please consider in your own judgment whether you can genuinely contribute towards the professional development of your colleagues. There probably will be a part-time photographer’s group forming soon.
Q: Does any of the BrainTrust groups have a specialty? The Fine Art BrainTrust is only focused on fine art. The other groups are organized based on geography and the time they meet, and there is a mix of specialties and experience levels. By including detailed information in the field below, you will allow us to evaluate which group may be of most interest to you.
“The best part about the braintrust is having a group of people to call on who deal with the same day to day issues that you do - it's the benefit of having a dialogue in a business that can often be solitary.”
— Brooklyn Braintrust member Jacob Blickenstaff.
